A/N: Just a quick one-shot of Stefan and Damon's brotherly love. Not in the episodes, just a scene I thought up of Damon remembering Stefan and some of the stuff they've been through.
Damon lounged on a chair in the boarding house as he drank his cup of blood. He stared at the blazing fire as he thought about his brother. Stefan, his baby brother. He thought about all the good times they'd had—when they were human. Before they'd met Katherine, when all they knew was each other and all they knew was that they were the Salvatore brothers—the best of friends.
"Why'd you screw it up?"
"I did it to save you!"
Damon's pale hand tightened against the glass cup filled with crimson blood as he remembered. He didn't want to remember. The memories of his baby brother flooded into his mind against his will, pushing, forcing their way into his head. The glass shook.
"What I did was selfish. I guess I just needed my brother."
The ice in Damon's blue eyes melted slowly as a soft look graced his features.
"Why are you here?"
"I missed my little brother."
Damon closed his eyes and let his head fall limp against the cushion—he opened his eyes to stare up at the ceiling of the now empty home. He willed back the wet substance in his eyes, letting it gather in his eyes instead of pooling out. His vision blurred.
"I'm sorry."
"So am I—for thinking for even a second that I could trust you!"
A gunshot rang through his memory as he remembered the cold dark night and the last thing he'd heard before he'd died.
"No, no!" A pause. "Damon…"
Damon lifted his head when the tears started to slip past his eyes and down his face. He gripped the glass tighter, watching the red, orange and yellow flames.
"You promised you wouldn't tell him!"
"I didn't think this would happen…"
Damon felt his gaze become unfocused as the tears fell down his face like rivers into an ocean. He could feel the glass shaking in his hand as he cried silently.
"Everything in this planet is not your fault—my actions, what I do, it's not your fault. I own them—they belong to me. You are not allowed to feel my guilt."
Suddenly, memories flew through his mind, not giving him a chance to remember anything except the pain.
"Why is everybody trying to save me?"
"Because I have to! Because I owe you!"
"Even in his darkest place, my brother still can't let me die."
"Well his emotions have been shut off—he can't care."
"It won't be because he loves me…"
Damon closed his eyes, lifting his arm up to cover his face as he sobbed silently, just a simple shake of his shoulders. The cup continued to shake.
"Wait!"
"Ugggh…"
"I can bring him back. I can lure Klaus back to Mystic Falls."
Damon stopped for a moment, taking in a deep breath as Elena's words echoed in his mind.
"It'll be because he loves you."
The glass shattered.
