He saw her sitting outside the lab, looking around.
Breath Gil, just like you rehearsed.
"Sara."
She looked up, smiling, but it faded a bit when she saw him.
"Grissom."
"I was, uh, wondering if you would, ah, like to go out with me, for dinner, some time." He mumbled the last part. Slowly she stood up, looking him in the eyes. Grissom blushed and looked down.
"Grissom look at me and say that again, this time without the mumbling." He repeated his request, trying his hardest not to look away.
"Are you actually asking me out?"
"Yes, I, ah, hope I'm not too late..."
"No. As in 'no I won't go on a date with you.'" He looked at her, his heart visibly breaking.
"But, I thought-"
"You thought wrong." Sara replied curtly, looking around again.
"At least, tell me why."
"I have a date tonight."
"A date? With whom?" Grissom replied shakily.
"Adam." Sara replied simply, as if it was obvious.
"Adam." He echoed hollowly.
"Yeah, Adam, my boyfriend. Math lecturer at Las Vegas University. It is our six month anniversary and-"
She was cut off by someone shouting her name. Grissom turned and saw a man a few years older than Sara striding toward her. He was medium build, had dark clothes on and square, 'computer nerd' glasses. Even Grissom knew he looked good, much better than I ever could anyway.
Sara immediately smiled, what Grissom once refereed to as 'his' smile.
"Hey baby, how are you? Sorry I'm late." his voice was low and he kissed her passionately. Braking away he slung his arm over her shoulders and looked at Grissom.
"Ah, Adam this is my boss Gil Grissom, Grissom this is Adam." Sara said quickly introducing them.
Adam held out his hand, which Grissom reluctantly took, still looking him up and down.
"Grissom…sounds familiar…"
"Oh, Sara's probably mentioned me…"
"No, no she hasn't." he paused whilst Grissom looked at Sara confused. "I know! Gil Grissom…the entomologist, right?" He chuckled and turned to Sara. "Baby, why didn't you tell me you had a famous boss?"
Sara shrugged, "Never came up" she replied simply "should we get going?"
"Yeah, sure thing. Nice to meet you Dr. Grissom."
And with that they strode off, hand in hand. Adam tucked a bit of Sara's hair behind her ear and quickly kissed her cheek.
"Grissom! You're here early, good. Listen, we have a new case…" Brass told him, interrupting his thoughts. He turned away.
"I'm not early, I'm late, way to late."
And with that he pushed the door to the lab open and reluctantly began the only thing that now brightened his day.
