Nanao was surprised to find Shunshui laughing after his appointment with Captain Hitsugaya. Shunshui might have been a very laid back man, but since he had been made captain commander of the thirteen court guard squads, he had been forced into become much more serious. The two of them had been together for a long time, so Nanao knew that she only had to give a look to let Shunshui know that he either needed to tell her what was so humorous, or he had to let it go and move on.

Shunshui, getting the message, gave one last chuckle before declaring, "Well, it looks like we will need to start hunting for a new captain for squad ten. Let's talk to twelve about which shinigami have bankai so we can start nailing down who would be best for the job."

Whatever Nanao had expected that meeting to be about, well, that wasn't it. Desperately trying to piece together what must have happened in the last half hour and drawing a blank, she could only utter an inarticulate "Why?"

Shunshui, apparently finding Nanao's confusion humorous, joked "Those Kurosaki women might end up being a threat to soul society, if they keep taking away every captain we can find for the tenth division."

Starting to recover now that she had a line of information to examine, Nanao began to push to see if she could get more information. "And so you just let Captain Hitsugaya abandon his post, so what, he can go live with a human girl? That sounds rather irresponsible captain. Instead of finding a new captain, would not it be better to call Hitsugaya back and convince him to stay in soul society until the girl dies naturally?"

Shunshui gave Nanao what she considered a rather patronizing look, but there seemed to be such a depth of emotion when he next spoke that it made Nanao pause and reflect.

"My dear Nanao, that might be the more reasonable response, but love and reason are rarely found together. Hitsugaya knows that they are so many things that could happen to a young inexperienced Quincy girl like Kurosaki that it is important to enjoy every moment. If everything works out as plan we shall have him back in a couple of decades with a nice demotion to reward him for his impatience."

After her reflection, Nanao still had one last question, "The case with Isshin Shiba was rather extraordinary, aren't you letting that event color your perception of what the current situation is?"

With that, it seemed that Shunshui's levity was instantly renewed as he quickly replied, "Oh course I am letting it color my perception. What is the use of living as long as I have if not to learn from the past? That being said, I am not so slow as to not see the obvious differences the old captain of ten and the one that just left this room. I thank you for voicing your concern as I am sure than Soi Fon will give just as vocal a dissent, but it is my call how I shall allow my subordinates to act."

Nothing more was said on the topic that day.
