Letters from Hogwarts
9/2/2015
Hey Dad.
Today is the first real day of Hogwarts, and it's just as cool as I thought it would be. The castle looks amazing and there's a bunch of ghosts and everything! Nicky would love it. Did you know there's a ghost named Nick in Gryffindor? I haven't had the chance to meet him yet, but one of the second years told me that his head is attached by a string. It sounds really cool.
Yesterday when we got to the school we got sorted. I'm not allowed to tell you how, because Nicky might find out, since Nicky might be magic too. By sorted, I mean that Hogwarts has four Houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Louis- the boy we met at Diagon Alley- is in Ravenclaw, and I got into Gryffindor. It's a little sad because I hoped that we could be friends, but it's supposed to be hard to do when you're in separate Houses.
My dormitory has 4 boys inside. I guess they're nice enough, but everybody seems to gravitate towards this one kid named James. Apparently, his dad was a war hero or something. James is already friendly with our Head of House, Professor Longbottom.
The classes are really interesting though. Professor Longbottom teaches Herbology, which is all about plants. But not the boring ones like in Daisy's garden; these plants are dangerous! Don't tell her I said that. While her plants aren't dangerous, she certainly is.
The other class I took so far was History of Magic. It's a ghost that teaches it! His name is Dirk Cresswell. Apparently, he died in the War (the same one James' Dad was in) and came back as a ghost. Before him, there was apparently another ghost professor- I didn't catch his name- and all he talked about was Goblins, like the ones we saw at that bank. Not the Professor Cresswell doesn't know about goblins- he was Head of the Goblin Liason Office when he was alive, even though he's muggleborn like me.
I miss you and everyone else. Except Daisy, she's mean. Give Nicky my love!
I have to go now; I have Defense against the Dark Arts next.
Love,
Elmer
