A/N - The idea for Letting Go came from my sister. I just wrote it. Anyway, read and enjoy.
Letting Go
The moment her mind had fabricated the words, she knew they were untrue. Nevertheless, she spoke them. "I can't."
Tails quaked. "Please Amy." His voice revealed a fathom of emotions that he fought to keep inside, fought to keep from streaming over his eyelids and down his furry face. "Please," he begged, "let Sonic go. You have to." Amy shook her head. At this motion, Tails' body drooped, reminding her of a flower whose last petal was hanging on for dear life; just as he now hung on to the smallest hope of her letting go.
"I can't," she said again.
Tails tensed and clenched his hands. "Why," he whispered. Locking eyes with her, he demanded, "Why!" Amy drew back, surprised at the furiousness in the fox's voice, the misery in his eyes.
Why couldn't she let go of Sonic? Images of his handsome face flashed through her mind. Memories of his laugh, wink, smile, stance, and swagger flooded her eyes. The images and memories evoked from within her a feeling of safety, a pounding heart, and flooding warmth.
Suddenly she knew.
"Because whenever I'm with him I feel safe. Because being in his presence makes me happy. Because⦠because I love him, Tails."
Tails sank to his knees. For hours, he'd reasoned with Amy. For hours, he'd pleaded and begged her to see logic. Now, he would speak the simple truth. The truth that was right in front of her. The truth she refused to see. "You're hurting him!"
Shocked, Amy cried, "I'm not hurting him." As an afterthought, "And I'll never let go!"
Glaring up at Amy, frustrated tears welled in Tails' eyes. He should have known better. Words of any kind were wasted on Amy. The only thing she would respond to was physical force. He stood. "Tails?" He took one step forward. Another. "Tails, what are you doing? No. Stay back!" He leaped forward. Amy screamed.
"Let him go!" His hands clasped tightly around Sonic's ankles and he pulled with all his might, struggling to free him from Amy's headlock. "He's turning blue!"
"He's always blue!" Amy hugged the unconscious Sonic tighter, oblivious of the shortness of his breath, of the reaper standing only an arms length away. She could not see the darkness that he saw. She could not see the pool of blinding light that he walked toward. And she could not hear the echoing of her voice as he heard it, his feet advancing steadily toward the light. "I'll never let go!"
