The family tree. Slight AU where Bolt and Himawari are twins. A school project turns out to be an adventure.
Epilogue:
In the center of the village Hidden of the Leaves was a very noble looking piece of architecture. Granted it was also a very old piece of architecture, with its hanging ivy roots and increasingly dulling paint that despite a certain Hokage's frequent speech on how "He'd get the painting done as soon as he finished up his paperwork." Continued to dull and chip away.
However no one could have imagined the paperwork would NEVER be finished.
So this very noble and very aged building sat like a stubborn old man in the village, refusing to change despite the growing population and technology. Of course this is not say the building was entirely Ancient. In fact in a large room in the very top of the building was illuminated with an eerie glow of a computer screen in the dark.
This was the Hokage's room. Known to every ninja in the village as where they went to receive mission data from. At any given point in the day, you'd see this room with the Hokage sitting very calm and cheery at his desk. His arms carefully supporting his head and his faux arm desperately tapping at the keyboard. You'd occasionally see the Hokage's advisor slap down more papers next to the blond, to which if you watched very carefully, you could watch the Hokage mouth a short string of profanities, before nodding and carrying on with his work.
The night time was no different, because that is exactly what the scene was playing out to be now.
"More budget increases?" Naruto noted looking at the spread sheet on top of the stack. His eyebrow was cocked in confusion as he did not remember giving the OK on this particular manner.
Shikamaru stroked his goatee and titled his head.
"Had to be done. When word got out you approved the mental care department of the hospital, the other departments went into a rage."
Naruto leaned back in his chair. "Oh I see." He says innocently, but he is hesitant to make eye contact with his advisor. Upon hearing Mental Care, he recalled a conversation he had with a good friend of his and chairwoman of the department.
"It's for the children." Her pink hair had been carefully cut again and Naruto mentally noted that he forgotten what she looked like with long hair in the first place. "And it's for me...Hokage Sama. You wouldn't deny an itty bitty loan, would you?" She had finished, but truth be told Naruto had already caved in from the moment Sakura asked "Can I ask you something Naruto?" But the icing on the cake came from the way she batted her eyes and called him Hokage-Sama, something Sakura-chan never did unless she needed something from Naruto that required a lot of ego stroking.
"Well its for a good cause..." Naruto says trying to stay cool.
Shikamaru shook his head. His bushy ponytail shoke in time with his head.
"Honestly Naruto if you do friends favors can you think first?" Shikamaru scolded. Naruto grinned nervously and looked out the window.
He was caught. Shikamaru opened his mouth to scold more, when his phone started buzzing.
"Saved by the Bell." Naruto whispered under his breath as he scratched at his cheek.
"Hello? Temari I am still trying to..."
A pause and Shikamaru frowns.
"How long has the fever set?...that long? Can he at least keep down liquids?...let me talk to him." His whispers are hurried. Naruto pretends to look through documents. It seemed urgent and it worried him..
"Hey Shikadai. What hurts buddy?...yeah. Yeah...It sounds like a flu. Get some rest. Listen to your mother." Shikamaru hangs up the phone, but his frown never loosens up.
Naruto's eyes narrowed as he recalled the first time Bolt caught the pneumonia. With a small smile, Naruto waves his faux hand in the air.
"Go, Go." He says. "Get home to your wife and kid. It's late right?"
Shikamaru looks stunned. "There's another 5 hours of paperwork left over." He reminded Naruto. His voice slow and steady.
"And that's with both of us working. "
'Yessh. Have some faith in me, Shikamaru dattebayo!" Naruto says throwing up his arms in exasperation. "If I can't do it, who can? Remember I am still Naruto Uzumaki!"
Shikamaru laughed. "Your ego grows with your age, Naruto-Sama."
Naruto's eyes sharpened and he folded his arms. "Hey, don't go saying things like that Shikamaru."
Shikamaru packed up his things and with a small farewell he departed to cross the dimly light village leaving the Hokage alone in the room.
A few hours pass and Naruto yawns.
This building was indeed very old. The building would settle and creek every few seconds and with the sound of the wind tapping at the window, the moon casting shadows, and the general loneliness the building was also very scary at night.
Standing up from his desk to stretch, Naruto moves to the large window to peer out it. He was greeted by the site of the Hokage monument. Faces of the past were detailed into the side of the mountain. Decades upon decades of struggles and epic stories had past on each face. Naruto mentally noted the name of each Hokage and though their brief history.
Minato Namikaze.
Fourth hokage.
My father.
Savoir of the village.
He stopped when he got his face and shrugged a little. Sometimes it felt surreal. Sometimes it felt like a one of his son's pranks that his face would be among greatness. Naruto smiled, but then quickly frowned. Was that paint on his face?! I swear if Bolt pulled another prank he'd….
TAP TAP TAP! BOOO!
There were plenty of startling sounds from behind the Hokage. Sounds that would have scared almost any man ninja or not. However Naruto was more than any man or ordinary ninja.
The first point was simply he did not frighten easily. Horror was something Naruto couldn't wrap his head around. Ghost, sure were unsettling, but demons no. Demons were something Naruto was an expert at. In fact it was hard to be afraid of such ideas, when the embodiment of violence and hate resided inside your brain. Naruto had seen the world end. He had seen friends die in front of him at war, other dimensions, and spirits literally being pulled out of bodies. Real life was scarier than movies.
The second point was that he had seen the prank coming. Naruto was painfully aware of the chakra of everyone in the village due his unique chakra abilities. It was something he had learned to ignore for the most part, but every so often he'd pay attention to his surroundings. Especially when it came to his Anbu bodyguards.
It was laughable really. Was there anyone in the village more capable of protecting himself? He had fought with the village and their traditions to put their talent to good use. Unfortunately the elders would not bulge and Naruto, the Kami no Shinobi, was given a pair of two bodyguards. Two that Sai, himself, as the now commander of the Root, had handpicked to suit Naruto's needs.
Dragging a lazy eye to face the girl in the Kabuki stylized rabbit mask, Naruto yawned and walked right past her. He was holding back a grin.
"Nanadaime Hokage- sama. You aren't any fun at all." She says behind her mask. Her voice isn't particularly springy, but very grunt for her age. She removes her mask, relieving a pair of black eyes and brown colored skin. Her hair was a silvery blonde and it seemed to be cut in a sharp bob, had it not been for the two thin twintails in the back of her head that flowed a little above the small of her back. She had a beauty mark right below her bottom lip and wore something utterly typical for members of the Anbu ninja.
"You know who I feel about formalities, Rei-chan." Naruto says narrowing his eyes. For anyone else he might have let it slide, but he knew this teenager personally.
Rei was a ninja native to the Village hidden in the clouds. She was perfectly skilled with swordsmanship and the lighting style. She was beyond her class of Chunin. Rei was also the daughter of Samui and the Godaime Raikage, Darui. Rei was closer in age to Kurenai's daughter than his own, but one could barely tell seeing how Rei developed all of Samui's….assets.
Naruto's eye twitched as he thought about the fate of his own daughter due to Hinata's genetic endowment.
"Father says I shouldn't listen to you when you tell me to go against my duties, Nanadaime Hokage- sama." she says with a witty smirk. "But then again, when I ever listened to my dad?"
Rei may have her mother's body and her father's skill in ninjutsu, but her attitude was in a league all of its own. Sometimes Rei was more a sukeban, than a ninja the way she organized her crew and lead her teams on missions. Those who worked under her, even called her "Boss Lady."
Naruto grimaced. "Better get back to your team." He was well aware of the other Anbu waiting in the shadows, watching Naruto's every muscle twitch.
"Yes sir, have a beautiful night!" and with that she was gone. Rei was a wonderful ninja, but it was very...embarrassing for a grown man to call a teenage girl his body guard. Sai had picked her for her skill, but also Naruto had gotten himself into his mess. In the beginning of his quarter as Hokage, Naruto had suggested the villages have a centralized source of ninjas that were simply for protection. It would encourage diplomacy and act as a permanent allied shinobi force. A Root Operation for every elemental nation to collectively share. Of course Darui had volunteered his troubled daughter who at the time was getting into more gang fights than he was comfortable with.
Poor Rei, the divorce had really made into quite the rebellious teen.
The word Rebellious reminded him of his own son and he frowned. It was already 4am. He had better pull his thoughts out the clouds and back into the paperwork in order to get home.
~Hours later~
"B-B-Bed." Naruto muttered faceplanting onto the king sized bed. He hadn't even bothered to get undressed or even take off his shoes. He ran his face across the crisp sheets and found the scent of his wife and fresh laundry.
It was the first time he had be able to lay down in the better part of 74 hours.
"This is what dreams are made of-dattebayo." The Hokage was already half asleep the moment his face hit the pillows. After all his work, a nap would be the best kind of repayment he could think of in the world.
Slowly, he drifted away, carefully ignoring the peeking rays of sun behind his window curtain. It was quiet for once and there was nothing in this world that would stop him for finally getting a decent night of…..
"DADDDDYYYYY!" A voice squeaked as the door flew open.
"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!" The voice was closer now. It was practically in his ear. When Naruto opened his eyes, his own greeted him.
"Good morning, Daddy!" Himawari said sweetly. She was mere inches from his face. In fact she was holding his face in-between her hands. Her tiny hands squeezed up the Hokage's cheeks in a manner than was less than professional. He was also highly aware that Bolt was literally jumping up and down on his back. "Time to get up!" His oldest twin said with conviction.
"Morning...its only…." he rolled over at the alarm clock and it read 8am. His eyes hollowed and his heart broke. It was physically and mentally impossible to rest when you had a pair of hyperactive Uzumaki twins literally pulling you from bed.
"B-But...But…" he wanted to explain to them why this was impossible for him to do, but before he could finish, Bolt stopped jumping on his father just long enough to lean his head over Naruto's face.
"We need your help. Something only you can do, dattebasa!"
"With a school project." Finished his female twin.
"We are counting on you! Please?" They both said in unison. Naruto could never turn down anyone in need. Especially his offspring. He heard Kurama chuckle deep inside his head. "And here they called Tsunade the legendary sucker." He said inbetween laughs. It was deep and mocking and Naruto made a note to share words with him later. With a deep grunt he pushed himself up only a little at first, but moving quicker than his little ones could watch, sat up right; effectively pulling Himawari on his lap and moving his son off his back. In fact Naruto made it appoint to go a little faster than most shinobi could follow. He liked to show off.
Himawari giggled. She was always so enticed with her father's power and abilities. She also inherited a lot of her chakra properties from her late grandmother as far as chakra sensory went. Boruto was not so easily impressed at the small stuff and was more annoyed his father had disrupted his jumping so suddenly.
Naruto kissed Himawari on the cheek and pulled in Bolt closer.
"So what is this project only I can help you with? Although my grades were great in the academy, I'm sure your mother would be a little more...suitable for schoolwork."
