See the Truth

Everyone who knew Rabastan would say he had no impulse control. It was one of the reasons he ended up chasing a witch that despite being from a notoriously dark family had no darkness in her and stood with the light side.

He just knew in his gut that she was meant to be his. Andromeda didn't make it easy for him, though.

"You're annoying," Andromeda stated sternly.

Rabastan grinned. "I know you don't mean that."

"Oh? But I do."

Rabastan brushed a stray strand of black hair off of Andromeda' shoulder. "Well, it's too bad for you that I don't scare away that easy."

She crossed her arms. "Eventually, you'll give up. I'll just wait you out." She said it with such certainty.

He hated to disappoint her.

Well, not really.

"Want to go to Hogsmeade with me?" Rabastan asked, trailing after her as she walked back to the dormitory after a couple of hours in the library.

She sighed. "Rabastan, please go away. I'm tired."

"You didn't answer my question," he pointed out with a grin.

"What would your brother think?" Andromeda asked, trying to scare him away.

"He won't like it. He thinks you're too much of a Muggle-born sympathizer, despite your last name," Rabastan answered honestly. He was careful to say Muggle-born and not Mudblood, fearing her wrath if the derogatory name slipped from his lips.

"Maybe you should follow his example then."

"And if I don't want to?"

She stopped in her tracks and faced him. "We're too different," she stated. She turned back around and quickened her pace.

Rabastan was left staring after her longingly.

"Lumos," Rabasatan whispered, the wandlight shining just enough so he didn't trip over his own feet.

He walked quietly, moving as silent as a kneazle.

He came across her in the garden, but she wasn't alone. He had been asleep in the Slytherin common room when Andromeda sneaking out had woken him. She must have not even noticed him in her haste to get out undetected.

He raced to follow her, curious about her late night wandering because she wasn't one to break any rules, and that included rules about curfew.

What he saw caused his heart to break. Andromeda was locked in a passionate embrace with some Muggle-born Hufflepuff. He didn't know the guy's name.

"Nox," he muttered, not wanting to see her lips touch another man's.

He saw shadows moving and knew the pair were leaving. He got behind the nearby tree and neither of them ever noticed him. He slid down and sat on the ground in an undignified heap, his back pressed against the rough bark, prickling him through the clothes he still wore from the day.

He couldn't believe this. No matter how many times Andromeda turned him down, he never imagined she might be seeing someone else. Of course, she'd keep the relationship a secret. Her family would never stand for her dating a Muggle-born.

He clenched his hands into fists. Why couldn't she see how perfect they could be together? Why was she so resistant to the truth?

He took a deep breath. The Hufflepuff was an obstacle. He was just an obstacle, though. Rabastan would overcome it, and Andromeda would eventually see Rabastan was better for her. He'd never give up. It was only a matter of time until Andromeda saw the truth.
