Shikamaru restrains, just barely, a sharp, purely agonized groan as he claps his hands over his eyes and wonders at exactly what point karma started biting him preemptively.

There's no way in Hell I've done anything to deserve this. No way in Hell.

The clock's ticking is frankly infernal tonight, though maybe that's not the clock and it's just Shikamaru's heart beat spinning out of control as it so rarely does even when he's in a bad situation, like now. He's sitting at the desk with the wick in the lamp burning, and couldn't get any sleep if he tried.

Why is it always the crazy, violent ones with really short tempers? Why can't it be a nice, pleasant, quiet girl instead of the wild ones?

Shikamaru frowns, taps a pen against the desk and goes over the day in his mind.

Still, there's nothing he can discern that he could have done differently to avoid getting into the situation that he's now in. And there's nothing Shikamaru can think of that would get him out of this situation without any wounds to show for it.

The world, Shikamaru decides, would be so much better off without women. They're pestilent, the lot of them, and so much more trouble than their worth. Shikaku tells him that all the time; if he'd been smarter he would have listened.

And seriously, how did he end up on a date with Haruno Sakura?

Just another puzzle Shikamaru can not begin to solve.
