Here it is, after all this time.

My second fic.

I hope you all enjoy it, sorry its short but there's only so much you can stick into a starting chapter.

Chaos energy, thought to be produced by the Chaos Emeralds was simply where its greatest concentration was. The ancient echidnas said it was 'the power enriched by the heart'. But there was more to it than that.

Chaos energy flows through every living being in Mobius.

All but one.

The clear night blanketed the neon city in its dark embrace as a dark figure stalked the rooftops of Metropolis zone. Below, people littered the streets making they're way home to sleep their cares away or to join their families. For one person, this was not the case. The chill of the night enhanced the star filled void in the sky above, the moon being the only natural light on the city below.

"Hand over your purse and no one gets hurt." The grizzled bear brandished his knife, the blade glinting in the streetlamp's florescent glow.

"Please, don't do this." the victim, a light blue rabbit, pleaded.

"Heh, no use crying over it, just gimme your purse and I'll be on my way." He'd managed to corner her in a nearby ally. She stumbled and fell into the back wall of the dead end alleyway. Its cold brick walls, dented trash cans and strewn litter offering no aid or cover for the poor girl as the mugger leered over her.

"Nooooooo!" Her scream echoed. The dark figure leapt behind the mugger.

"Huh?" he turned around, "Who's the- arrrggghh!" the mugger's grip on his knife left him as the figure latched onto his neck, two sharp fangs piercing the flesh of his neck and sucking the life from him

The body crumbled as it lost consciousness, leaving the grey spiked figure to finish him off. The shaking rabbit had slowly picked herself up, trying to make as little noise so she wouldn't attract her saviour's attention.

No such luck; he raised his head, glowing embers of eyes glinting in the nearby lamp light, and snarled at her. She tried to run past him but he was surprisingly fast, cutting off her escape route and pinning her to the wall. She dropped to her knees, shivering in fear more than the cold. Her voice trembled as tears obscured her vision.

"Please, no!" She pleaded, as he tilted her head and exposed her neck.

"Forgive me," He whispered, his smooth, deep voice seeming to break on the words, a tear trickling silently down his face even as he lowered his head to sink his fangs into the soft flesh of her neck.

A police officer's flashlight landed on the hedgehog's fur, then shone into its face. The grey creature turned, sliding his fangs from the girl's neck. Shielding his eyes from the bright light the torch cast upon him, he growled at the policeman and dashed past; shoving him with his shoulder and knocking him against the wall. The sobbing woman dropped to a heap on the floor. The shocked officer picked himself up and spoke hurriedly into his radio.

"Officer Barnes to control," he looked over to the motionless body of the mugger and the collapsed form of the woman, who was silently sobbing. "Call an ambulance I've got two code two fortys; one appears unconscious, over." He ran over to the woman and checked her wound; two punctures holes in her neck, blood still flowing from it. A female voice crackled over the speaker.

"Control to Officer Barnes, an ambulance is heading to your position. Any sign of the attacker, over?"

"I caught a glimpse but I'm not sure." He tore at his shirt sleeve, using it to apply steady pressure to the neck wound and try to stem the bleeding. "He looked just like Shadow the Hedgehog"
