Chapter One

The elegant music from the orchestra floated out of the balcony and drifted as far out as the sea. No one inside the palace seemed to notice the frightening pirate ship that hid behind the woodland area. This dinner party was for the Duchess Jeshicka and her soon-to-be husband, the governor's son, Frederick. Jeshicka and her mother, the formal Duchess, had escaped from the celebration to the balcony, which faced the sea. Jeshicka had refused to marry Frederick at first, but then decided it would be easier just to get it over with. She would always be a duchess, after all.

"Your father and I are so proud of your decision. Frederick is really a wonderful man. You just need time to get to know him." Her mother said.

"I could have had that time if Father hadn't suddenly announced that I was getting married." Jeshicka replied, her soft, dark brown curls bouncing as she spoke. She pulled up her blue flowered print dress a bit so she could pace along the balcony. She set her piercing blue eyes upon the water in the distance, then turned them back to her mother. "I wish not to marry."

"As would any woman your age. You are still young. I can only hope you never meet your one true love. Your heart would shatter in the instant because you would eventually realize that you are married." Her mother said.

"How could you wish that? That is my dream! Married or not, I want to meet him. Whereever he may be." Jeshicka exclaimed. It was as if her mother had never loved a man before. Jeshicka did not understand why she was acting this way. "I wish to be alone."

"Very well." Her mother said, picking up about two inches of her scarlet gown and gracefully strutting back into the ballroom. Jeshicka stared after her, then sighed. She fixed her gaze upon the ocean again. She would have given anything to be out there, anywhere but there on that balcony. She started off to the stairs into the dark garden. The beautiful marble steps made her heels patter as she stepped down on them. She stepped onto the soft green grass and gazed up at the willow trees. That's when she noticed the white sails in between the tree limbs. She made her way through to get a closer glimpse when suddenly, from behind her, someone grabbed her around the waist and with their free hand covered her mouth so she couldn't make a sound. The person picked her up and struggled to take her in the direction she was going anyway. They drew nearer to the ship and Jeshicka saw that this was no ordinary ship… it was a pirate ship.

The crew on board awaited her. A woman grabbed her and dragged her towards the captain's quarters. The rest of the crew looked on. Jeshicka struggled as much as she could. Finally when she was released into the room, she let out a wild scream and the woman slammed the doors shut, locking them. Jeshicka kicked and pounded her fists on them and screamed for help. But the ship began sailing away, and Jeshicka knew that since the winds were so high, they would be far away from the island where she lived before anyone would know she was gone. She heard voices from the other side of the doors. She tried hard to listen to what they were saying. One of the doors unlocked and in came a man with a long brown coat and a red bandana underneath a brown sailor's hat. He had long hair that was twisted into dreadlocks in some places and threaded with beads mostly around the front. His smile was full of gold-plated teeth and he smelled of rancid meat.

"Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, lassie. I'm Captain Jack Sparrow."
