Prologue – The Fall of an Alpha

They had come out of nowhere but with the sole mission of taking down the one they had heard was called an alpha. The creatures had outnumbered Jacob yet the Quileute Chief had put up a good fight giving out some blows to them yet it still did not change his fate.

Jacob Black lie in the grass his crimson blood staining the ground around him. His breathing was labored as he tried to breathe through the immense pain he was feeling. He knew that this was it, that this was the end of his life. It was no use in trying to fight even his body had given up because it was not healing the horrendous injuries he had been dealt.

His pack were on their way and before he had phased out he had heard their pleas for him to hold on just a little bit longer. Jacob didn't want to anymore as he could feel himself getting colder and really he was tired of the agony he was in from being so torn to shreds.

He wished he could see his wife Bella just one more time, but he would have to make due with the memories that he had of her. Jacob played them over and over again knowing he wanted his last thoughts to be of her.

Jacob prayed to the gods of his tribe that Bella would be taken care of now that he could not do that for her anymore. He wanted her to continue living and moving on for him. He needed her to do this and he begged the spirits to help her see that she was not alone even when he could no longer be by her side.

The pack was almost there but Jacob knew that he would be long gone by the time they happened upon his body. He would miss them and he hoped that the gods would guide them when he couldn't.

His clenched fists relaxed because he could no longer feel the pain of his injuries as his soul prepared to leave this world. He opened his eyes to see for the last time the sun peaking out from behind the clouds shining its golden rays upon his broken body. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips as the beauty of the moment made his passing peaceful.

Images began to fill his mind of his Bella and he knew that this was what her life was going to be like when he was gone. The fact that she was round with his child made him feel full of hope for her life. She would always have a part of him and that made him feel more at ease.

A moment of bitter selfishness came over Jacob as his brave front slipped a little and tears fell down his cheeks as he cried for all that he was leaving, even though he was grateful that he knew Bella and his child would be taken care of. He was selfish enough not to want to die.

Numbness had settled into his body now and he felt all his energy slip away from him. He closed his eyes knowing it was time to go now.

His Mother's voice called out to him from the light that blinded him and he let himself be guided towards her.

Before following his Mother he looked back to where he had left his body and saw the pack surrounding him. Their howls of grief echoed around the clearing but he could not stay with them. It was time to go with his Mom into the spirit world.

Bella and his pack were the last thought he had before being swept away into the bright light.
