Julie still can't believe it.
Kirsten is sitting on the opposite her on the couch pouring her heart out.
Explaining that at 19 she felt she didn't have a choice, Jimmy was gone, back to LA, it was just after sophomore year had begun, he was back in LA living his life, she wasn't really a part of it anymore, they had grown apart but had made a real go of it that summer, in the end wanting to be together wasn't enough, he ended it.
It was three weeks after he had left that she realized she was pregnant.
She was alone, had nobody; felt she had no other choice, so she had the abortion.
She never told Jimmy.
Kirsten is crying now and Julie hands her a wad of Kleenex, then uneasily picks up Kirsten's hand and squeezes it.
Kirsten whispers that she has no right to be this upset, it was her choice; Julie looks away not wanting Kirsten to see the tear that is running down her cheek.
She can sympathize more than Kirsten realizes.
Kirsten, Julie's tears not going unnoticed, is now sobbing and apologising profusely for having even brought it up.
Julie draws her stepdaughter into an uneasy hug, promises her everything will be okay, knows all too well that it is what she needs to hear right now.
