The end... (or the beginning?)
Takashi and Saeko are sprinting down the small street they are on, feet hammering on the concrete, hurtling over felled poles and dodging past car wrecks, the smell of burning plastic and steel thick in the air. Both struggling to not collapse, to keep moving, to survive. Too tired from the last hour of running. Exhausted the two teens are forced to start slowing down to a jog by their burning lungs. The gunshots faded the longer they ran, until the stopped after a final *Bang*. The air was silent for a few seconds, no groaning, no shooting, nothing, but the peace was shattered by a blood curdling scream of pain, before just silence again. They started sprinting again, forcing their legs to move again, with their lungs screaming in protest. A walking corpse limped around the corner of the street, emerging onto the street behind them, limping slowly towards them, its groans of hunger filling the recently silent night.
They turned down onto another street, having less wrecks along the road, but containing more of the living plague. They slowed back down to a jog, saving what little energy remained to clear out the closest of the lurkers. They approached slowly, their speed barely above a walk, trying to catch their breath, the stench of death replacing the burning metal odor in the air. The living dead shambling closer and closer, slowly coming forwards. Their arms outstretched, trying to reach out and grab a meal, something to eat, to consume, and the only food on the menu for them right now is them.
Takashi readied his bat for a bludgeoning strike and sprang forward, his bat flashing through the air before connection with one of their heads, creating a satisfying noise, as the bone shattered and the lurker fell for the last time, never to get up again and roam. While Takashi was dispatching one, Saeko had put her kendo training into action, and had felled four in a few seconds, starting a beautiful dance of death, her blade flashing, catching the suns reflection as it danced, slicing limb and head alike. Neither stopped until they were surrounded by dead, mostly decapitated ones, courtesy of Saeko. Takashi was breathing hard, trying to regain his breath, while Saeko was standing there, a smile on her face at all the destruction.
They looked behind them, seeing how many were following, and were met by a horde of them. Flooding down the street after them, any who fell were trampled by the shambling horde. Mail boxes were crushed under the assault, gardens that had survived this long, even though just mainly as weeds, were trampled. She yelled a quick "look out" at him, but It was too late, as he bounced off a pole, sticking at an odd angle, hanging from a car on the other side of the street. He hit the ground hard, before being overwhelmed. She leaned down quickly, and grabbed his limp arms, before starting to run again, at a much slower rate. His body dragging behind them, the wave of undead slowly streaming towards them. Never slowing, never stopping, their hungry moans filling the air.
As she was dragging him down the street, she took notice of a house, looking rather untouched, with an iron fence, and with the gate open slightly, at least she hopes it is, because if it isn't they are both as good as dead. As they got closer she breathed a small sigh of relief, the gate was open, but it also wouldn't keep out this many of them for long. She dragged his unconscious body into the yard after entering through the gate, then letting him down softly, before sprinting back to the gate. She reached it a couple feet before they would, and she slammed the gate shut, and locked it before turning back and walking to Takashi.
She checked the rest of the yard quickly, hoping for another way out, but there was none, their luck had run out. She walked back to Takashi, and clutched his unconscious body to her. A small tear sneaking out as she heard the gate lock give, with a loud cracking, it fell to the ground to be trampled, and another tear slipped out, then another, before a small stream formed running down her face. They got closer, surrounding the two, and a small ball rolled between them, unnoticed. All she heard was "I'm sorry" before the ball exploded, and a white light surrounding the two before any shrapnel hit them.
Saeko POV:
I clutched him to me, holding him tightly. Trying not to breakdown, we were going to die, he was going to die, why, what had he done to deserve this, what had any of them done? But her silent musing were unanswered, except for the footsteps getting closer, she started to cry, knowing this was the end. Not noticing the little ball that rolled beside her, but her eyes snapped open to see someone standing outside the fence yell "I'm sorry" before my world went white, and I knew no more
I gasped and bolted up in my bed, biting back a scream. "What was that?" I ask myself. It felt so real. Looked so vivid, but it had to be a dream, who ever heard of people eating each other like that. I haven't ever met those people, although I have seen them. I checked my phone before getting dressed, on it there was one message from a random number, the message saying "that wasn't a dream, it all happened, you all died. But before you got to us, a young man kept begging us for a second chance. There was things he really wanted to say and do. But alas, this thing, was never planned. But he convinced me to give you a second chance, but I also allowed him to remember this, if you spark his memory with an action or memory. Good luck, and there is no third chance"
