Nicodemus

Once upon a time Ebb and I were best friends. We didn't spend every bloody moment together but we loved one another. We used to keep each other's secrets when we were five. Thick as thieves mum would mutter when she caught wind of our latest exploits. The afternoon I'd broke the news to her she was so shocked I had to spell me to speak.

"Cat got your tongue!" I spat at her while she blinked at me rapidly. She'd completely lost focus and caused her goats to get anxious.

A few of them, the goats that is huddled together on the far end of the ranch as if they were somehow bound there. It was as far from me and Ebb as possible. We were standing tucked properly in her small shack by the barn at Watford.

"You really serious then? Mum's going to faint when she hears this." She pleads with me. I stand upright then suddenly smirking then tucking my smile away. Ebb knows fully that mum and I have a love hate relationship. I scowl remembering it too much.

"Darling Ebenezer always playing innocent." I hiss at her turning my back and heading towards the door. I stop just before I reach it.

"Perhaps you've no desire to be a threat in these dark times but I will not fold! You are my sister as great as I. Together our magic knows no bounds. You feel it same as me." I say feeling my voice as it falls flat toward the end.

Ebb has always been rather easy to get fired up, never one to go off but she makes her annoyance clear. Since we were young, I've always known how to get reactions from her. Behind me I hear her sigh so I walk toward her. She reaches for my hand slowly. I allow her to take it.

"Nicodemus." She starts cautiously.

"You know I'd give anything, anything to be beside you. My brother, my twin but this is not my fight. The world is mages is not my home." Her eyes fall the ground. Our eyes I should say, their complexion identical. At our younger days here at Watford I'd always known this simple truth. Do you remember when you and Fiona would spell yourself off campus after curfew? Do you remember how nervous it made me? How properly paranoid I was just knowing my bloody twin brother and roommate were out and I knew! To think I'd been afraid of being reprimanded for association with the pair of you. You old bad boy type with the headmistress' sister. What a sight for sore eyes you two made. My favourite ex girlfriend of yours by far by the way." Ebb says.

I shudder, and wince at her emphasis on ex. Taking my hand away from hers now, I walk toward the door again.

"May I have your attention please!" She slips between her teeth and with a wave of her palm my body jerks and I stand perfectly in front of her with the poise of proper gentleman.

I try to repress my smirk and fail. Our eyes meeting finally.

"Now now sister, no need to be feisty." She lowers her gaze. When my body is in my control again I spin around. I walk coolly now toward her door a. Whatever it is she wishes to tell me can be said to my ass. In other words darling little sister, mums guardian angel.. kiss my ass. If ever she could read minds I wish it were now. I consider briefly turning around and spelling her silent just to spite her when she clears her throat.

"From now on there's but one wish you need follow brother. We may meet weekly, but never bother mum again. Keep your distance from the house, and every week if you want to talk I'll listen out back by the tombs. If your bloody consistent I'll consider bringing you some of your favorite meals, mum has broken her diet and her book clubs require biscuits enough for an army."

When I don't respond after a few seconds Ebb clears her throat once more and I don't know why I am lingering so long standing as still as I can, saying nothing. Will I miss my sister now that am a vampire?
