Dragons vs. Dinosaurs
AN: If you don't like this version of Jurassic Park please keep it to yourself. I wrote in my own words.
In a place called Badlands a group of Paleontologists were high in the hills unearthing a Dinosaur fossil. They used brushes and other equipment, including computers. They had just found the fossil of a Utahraptor. Among them was their leader Dr. Alan Grant and his assistant Ellie Sattler. Also on the site was a young girl 14 years of age. She had been there camping when the Paleontologists arrived and made her take down her tent and fire pit. She refused to move however as she was there first. So the Paleontologist let her stay on site as long she didn't get in the way. She sat in a camp chair near a sliver trailer.
Her name was Edelweiss. She had black hair and vivid green eyes. She wore a red blouse, jeans, black boots, and a black cowboy hat that was covered in black scales. She also had black leather fingerless gloves and dark sunglasses. Her black hair was pulled back into a braid.
She watched the Paleontologists wander about or brushing dirt off the Dinosaur bones. She really didn't see what was so special about Dinosaurs, especially since they were all dead. She leaned back in her chair and pulled her hat over her eyes. At that moment a large blue helicopter approached and landed near the trailer. It spinning blades stirring up the dust. Edelweiss lifted the brim of her hat to see who the helicopter belonged to. Approaching her was a jolly looking old man in white close and a hat. He carried a cane and wore glasses. He walked up to the trailer. He smiled when he saw Edelweiss.
"Hello there," he said cheerfully. Edelweiss blinked. She didn't expect him to be so friendly.
"Hello," she said.
"You searching for Dinosaur bones?" the man asked. Edelweiss frowned.
"I was here camping," she said. "Until these guys showed up and ruined my weekend."
"Then I daresay you could use a better holiday," the man said. He had a Scottish accent.
"Yeah, you've got one?" Edelweiss asked.
"I think so," the man said. "What's your name?"
"I'm Edelweiss, who are you?" Edelweiss asked. The man reached out a hand to her.
"I'm John Hammond," he said. Edelweiss shook it. "Why don't you gather your stuff and I'll meet you at the chopper. I'm going to go inside and have a word with Dr. Grant." Edelweiss nodded and got up. Hammond went into the trailer. Edelweiss picked up her tent and sleeping bag. She went over to the chopper which had quieted down. She sat on a rock to wait.
Half an hour later Hammond returned with Grand and Sattler. The two Paleontologists were covered in dirt. They looked surprised that Edelweiss was standing next to the chopper.
"You're coming too?" Sattler asked.
"That's right," Edelweiss snapped. "You shouldn't have stolen my campsite if you didn't want me along."
"You were camping on top of a Dinosaur fossil," Grant said. "We were going to give it back when the bones were removed."
"What's so special about Dinosaurs?" Edelwiess asked as they got into the chopper. "They're extinct."
"We can learn a lot from the fossils," Sattler said. "What our planet used to be like." Edelweiss leaned in her seat.
"You don't find Dinosaurs impressive do you?" Hammond said. Edelweiss shook her head.
"Well, this trip might just change your mind about that," Hammond said. Edelweiss narrowed her eyes.
"Alright, I'll give you one chance to change my mind," she said.
The chopper flew high over the landscape. Edelweiss looked out the window. The chopper headed for an airport where Hammond said he had a plane waiting to take them to Costa Rica. The Chopper landed and they all go off. Edelweiss followed them to a large jet that was preparing for lift off. Edelweiss boarded the plane and found a seat next to a window. She sat down and leaned back. The others found their seats. When the plane was ready it taxied towards the runway.
"Where are we going exactly?" Edelweiss asked.
"We're going to an Island of the cost of Costa Rica, called Isla Nublar," Hammond said. "I have a very special park there and I'd like you all to see it first hand."
"What sort of park?" Edelweiss asked.
"It's a surprise," Hammond said winking. Edelweiss sighed and looked back out the window.
The plane headed south towards Mexico. It landed in Mexico city to refuel then headed off again. The sun went down while they were in the air. It took all night to fly to their destination. Edelweiss occasionally glanced out the window towards the back of the plane, then sit back in her chair satisfied about something. The others wanted to ask her what she was looking for, but figured she wasn't up to telling her secrets.
Then at long last the plane landed in Costa Rica. They all got off and headed for another chopper. They met up with two more people; a lawyer named Gennaro and man dressed in black named Dr. Malcolm. After everyone was introduced they got onto the chopper and it headed over the ocean. Again Edelweiss kept looking out the window towards the back of the chopper.
"What are you looking for?" Grant finally asked.
"Wildlife," Edelweiss said smugly. "Humans bore and disgust me, I prefer to be around animals." She turned back towards the window. They began conversing amongst themselves. Edelweiss paid them no heed. She had no interest in the conversation on Dinosaur bones or chaos theory. She was just about to dose off when when Hammond announced that they had arrived. They all looked out the window to see a lush, green, island that was made of nothing but mountains and cliffs. The chopper headed between the mountains, heading for its landing pad. The six humans scrambled to get their seat belts buckled. Edelweiss laughed when Grant couldn't get his. The chopper began to lower itself like a yo-yo. But then eventually it landed and a man came to open the door. They filed out and headed for two orange and grey security jeeps. Grant, Malcolm, and Sattler got into one, and Hammond, Gennaro, and Edelweiss got into the other. The jeeps, which were driven by security guards, headed away from the chopper pad. Edelweiss glanced behind them, as though watching for something.
"You'll see wildlife in a minuet," Hammond said. "Just be patient." Edelweiss looked at him.
"Fine," she said. She leaned back into her seat and watched the scenery go by. The place was quite humid, but there was a nice cool mist in the air. She liked the place, and didn't mind the humidity. Edelweiss zoned out Hammond having a heated argument with his lawyer. The jeeps came out of the trees and into a clear grassy area. Suddenly Hammond ordered the jeeps to stop.
"There you go," he said to Edelweiss. He pointed to a tall Brachiosaurus stomping about between two trees. Edelweiss couldn't help but be as memorized as everyone else at the site of the animal. It began pulling leaves off the trees and munched them.
"Oh wow, it's huge," Edelweiss said.
"What do you know about Dinosaurs?" Hammond asked her.
"Only what I've seen in museums," Edelweiss said. "I don't even now what each dinosaur is called. You humans have made up such complicated names for them." Hammond then turned his attention to Grant and Sattler. They began talking science again and Edelweiss ignored it. She looked up at the Dinosaur. It heaved itself onto its hind legs and grabbed the greener leaves on top of the tree it was grazing from. Then it landed on all fours again, making the ground shake. Edelweiss wondered how close she could get to it.
"How fast are they?" Grant asked, still stunned.
"Well we've clocked the T-Rex as 36 mils per hour," Hammond said. Both Grant and Sattler really became alert at this news.
"You have a T-Rex?" Sattler asked, wanting to make sure she heard right.
"Yes," Hammond said. Edelweiss took her eyes off the Dinosaur for the moment.
"Which one is the T-Rex?" she asked. "Is it that the big one with sharp teeth? A Bigtooth."
"Yeah, there's a picture of one there," Hammond said. He pointed to the door of one of the jeeps. Edelweiss saw the silhouette of a Dinosaur skeleton. Grant began stumbling around like he was about to hit the ground and Sattler was trying to calm him down. Hammond just chuckled. He went to the edge of the bluff.
"Welcome," he said with confidence. "To Jurassic Park." They all looked into a shallow meadow and saw two Brachiosaurus and a herd of Parasaurolophus, or Boneheads as Edelweiss knew them as. Grant and Sattler stared at the Dinosaurs with awe. Edelweiss couldn't help but smile at what she saw. Though this was the first time she'd ever seen live Dinosaurs the fact that they were animals at all, was enough to make her happy.
"How'd you do this?" Grant finally managed to ask.
"I'll show you," Hammond said. They all got back into the jeeps and continued towards the Visitor Center. They passed more Dinosaurs on the way. Three Pterosaurs, or Gliderwings to Edelweiss, flew over the jeeps.
A while later they arrived at the Visitor Center, a large stone building. They got out of the jeeps and entered the building. It was very spacious. Staircases led to the levels above. It looked very much like a museum, complete with the skeletons of Dinosaurs in a quarrel. Edelweiss took her hat off. She followed the others up the stairs, through the building to a dark room. Rows of seats sat in front of a large screen. Hammond and his guests found their seats. Edelweiss sat at the very back row, the farther way she was from these strangers the happier she was. She leaned back and put her hat over her eyes. She dozed off listening to a video about how the Dinosaurs were made. Apparently it was done my cloning. Using Dinosaur blood found in mosquitos that lived during the Dinosaur Age and got stuck in tree sap. The scientists at a company called InGen used frog DNA to complete the Dinosaur DNA. When that was over the floor with the seats on it began turning. The screen turned into a window that showed scientists in white lab coats bustling about the many machines and other equipment. Some of the scientists were carrying large eggs and putting them on a table. The floor continued to move.
"Can't we see the eggs?" Sattler protested. She, Grant, and Malcolm pried the safety bar off their laps and got up. Hammond, the lawyer, and Edelweiss followed. They went into the lab where the eggs were. An asian man in a white coat escorted them to the table. It had grass, leaves, and moss on top of it. A dozen or so eggs were nestled in the moss. A robot arm was turning the eggs like it was roasting hot dogs. They all gathered around the eggs. Suddenly one of them began twitching and cracking.
"Oh, good," said the asian man. "I was hoping they'd hatch before I had to go to the boats." The egg cracked some more. Hammond began coaxing the baby Dinosaur out of its shell.
"Where's their mama?" asked Edelweiss softly.
"These eggs were genetically grown in this lab," the asian man said. "All the Dinosaur eggs were. Dinosaurs on this island can't breed. We've genetically engineered them to all be females."
"Oh, poor things," Edelweiss said. "But why make them all females? Why not just spay and neuter them?" The man quickly turned his attention back to the eggs. The baby Dinosaur was all the way out by now. It was the size of an average pet lizard. It kept screeching.
"John, the kind of control you're attempting is impossible," Malcolm said. "If there's one thing the history of evolution has taught us is that life can't be contained. Life breaks free, it expands to new territories. It crashes thought barriers; painfully, dangerously even." Edelweiss smiled at this little speech.
"And here I thought mankind was passed all hope," she said.
"You're implying that a group composed entirely of females will breed?" asked the asian man, confused.
"I'm implying that life finds away," Malcolm explained. Grant was now holding the tiny Dinosaur in his hands. A look of horror crossed his face.
"What species is it?" he asked with a sense of foreboding.
"It's a Utahraptor," the asian scientist said. Edelweiss lit up at this news.
"Oooh, Speedyclaws," she said. "Those are my favorite."
"You bred raptors?" Grant asked, ignoring Edelweiss.
After the baby raptor was put back into its nest the group went outside where they found a large paddock made of steel, concrete and electric wire.
"Is this where you keep the Speedyclaws?" Edelweiss asked.
"Yes it is," Hammond said. At that moment a crane lifted a large cow into the air and lowered it into the paddock which was filled with shrubbery. Edelweiss ran onto a platform where she could see into the paddock better. There came a commotion from under the shrubbery, the sound of raptors attacking the cow. She wasn't disturbed by this at all, she too like beef. She completely ignored the conversation between the other guests and the raptor expert Muldoon. After a while the crane pulled out a shredded up sling. Hammond beamed.
"Who's hungry?" he asked.
They all went back inside and went to a small dining room where they were served lunch; chili and roasted bass. Edelweiss continued to ignore the conversations. She hadn't eaten in three days. Grant, Sattler, and Malcolm were explaining to Hammond why it was a bad idea to create Dinosaurs. Hammond was outnumbered in that argument.
"Edelweiss, do you like my park don't you?" he asked.
"Oh yes," Edelweiss said. "It's a beautiful place. The Dinosaurs are pretty cool. I personally don't care if they eat meat or plants. Humans are just as much monsters and Dinosaurs are. Humans are constantly at war with each other and killing things they don't understand. Dinosaurs are just doing what they were born to do, like any old animal, and they coexisted without problems." She ate another bite of bass. "These three just don't like the you made meat eating Dinosaurs, because that means Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain." Sattler jumped to her feet.
"Now wait just a minuet," she snapped. "We have good reason to be nervous about the T-Rex and Utahraptors. We value our lives."
"Yes, I'm sure you do," Edelweiss said, spearing another slice of bass on her fork. "But guess what, so do they." That shut them all up. They ate their lunch in silence.
After lunch the group headed back to the lobby. Edelweiss trailed behind them with her hand in her pockets.
"You're going to have a spot of company out in the park," Hammond said. "With our target audience, that's one of the reasons why I wanted Edelweiss on this trip." Suddenly two kids came barreling towards Hammond and tackled him in a hug. The two kids; a blond girl named Alexis and a brown haired boy named Tim, talked excitedly about their chopper ride to the island. They all then headed for the door. Waiting for them were two yellow and green SUVs with glass roofs and the Jurassic Park logo on the doors. Hammond kept gushing over his park and attractions.
"I would like you to ride in the front car," Hammond told Edelweiss. "Since you're part of the target audience."
"Thank you, Mr. Hammond," Edelweiss said. "But I have my own transportation, which I didn't want to bring out unless I knew it was safe." Suddenly Lex screamed in surprise, staring at the roof of the Visitor Center. They all spun around to see what had caused the stir. Perched on the roof was a tall, reptilian looking creature.
At first they all thought it was another Dinosaur, but looking at it again, it was clear that this was an entirely different animal. It was at tall as an Arabian stallion and jet black. It had the body of a large cat and the long legs of a wolf. It had a long, muscular neck and a long tail. It's feet had four fingers with sharp talons, its two front paws had posable thumbs. It a series of flaps around the back of it's narrow head, two of them looked like ears. It had large cat like eyes that were red. On it's broad forehead was a red hourglass shape. And folded against either side of its body was a set of bat-like wings.
It glared down at the group with a cold look. When it spotted Edelweiss its expression lightened.
"What is that thing?" asked Sattler.
"That's my Dragon," Edelweiss said proudly. "Her name is Black Widow, she's my best friend." The black creature spread its black wings and glided down to Edelweiss. She landed and folded her wings. Now the group could see a black and red saddle on her back and a bridle around her head, the ends of the bit was carved in the shape of a spider. Edelweiss hugged the Dragon's head.
"You have a Dragon?" asked Sattler, shocked.
"Yes," said Edelweiss. "It's time to give those Dinosaurs some real competition." Black Widow snorted in agreement. "We both wanted to make sure none of you were going to hurt her, that's why you haven't met her until now." Black Widow yawned, showing teeth as black as her scales.
"Now, lets go see these Dinosaurs before they go extinct again," Edelweiss said. She mounted her Dragon. The saddle was positioned on the Dragon's shoulder in front of her wings. The rest of the group, except for Hammond, filed into the two cars. Hammond went back inside.
The cars set off. They were run automatically, so no diver was needed. They went single file towards the large gate that let into the park. Edelweiss and Black Widow cantered next to them. They passed through the gate and through the dense greenery. A narrator was informing the passengers in the cars about the Dinosaurs they were passing. They passed the first Dinosaur pen. It was supposed to hold a Dilophosaurus, but the Dinosaur was nowhere to be seen. The cars went on by, filled with disappointed passengers. While on rout to the next paddock Grant rolled down his window, Edelweiss and Black Widow were walking right next to his window.
"Where an Earth did you get that Dragon," he asked. "I didn't even know they existed."
"The world is full of surprises isn't it?" Edelweiss said. "Yesterday I thought Dinosaurs were extinct."
"Good point," Grant said. "Why did you wait to introduce her again?"
"Black Widow and I look out for each other," Edelweiss said. "If you didn't know she existed then you couldn't harm her. She was always flying nearby. If any of you had tried to harm me then she would have launched a surprise attack on you all and that would have helped me get away. But since we're going to meet big Dinosaurs, I figured you wouldn't mind having her at hand." At that moment the cars stopped in front of a larger pen, filled with trees. According to the narrator it was the pen of the T-Rex. The group turned their attention to the pen, hoping to see the T-Rex. But like before, the Dinosaur didn't show.
"I was really starting to like this park until now," Edelweiss said to Black Widow.
"Yeah, I don't think this place will go anywhere," Black Widow said. At that moment a large goat was put into the pen, in plain sight of the cars. Black Widow licked her lips. But even with this offering, the T-Rex didn't show. The cars moved on and Black Widow followed.
They came up to another pen that had a big grassy field and no fence. Grant spotted a security jeep in the grass. He opened the door and jumped out of the car. Sattler followed him. Everyone else exited the cars and followed Grant to what he had spotted in the distance. Edelweiss and Black Widow trotted along side them. Soon they came up to a large Triceratops that was laying on its side. Black Widow growled at the Triceratops. The group gathered around the Dinosaur, petting it. Sattler was helping the veterinarian that was looking after the Triceratops, which appeared to be ill. Edelweiss and Black Widow kept their distance, the suspected they would have been asked to stay back anyway. Grant and Sattler were crouched near the Dinosaur's head. Sattler began examining its eyes with a small flashlight. She began muttering to herself. They were all so mesmerized by the Dinosaur that they failed to see the darkening clouds. Black Widow began fidgeting on the spot and tossing her head.
"Calm down Black Widow," Edelweiss soothed. "It's just a little rain."
"No, it's not just a little rain," Black Widow said. "It's a lot of rain, and wind." Edelweiss dismounted and stayed by her Dragon's head. The clouds darkened and the wind picked up.
"What's the matter with the Dragon?" asked Sattler.
"She can sense a storm coming," Edelweiss said. "But other than that she's okay." The group turned back to examining the Dinosaur.
Suddenly there came a clap of thunder. It startled everyone. Black Widow roared in surprise and flared her wings.
"Doctors if you please," said Gennaro. "I must insist that we get moving."
"If it's alright I'd like to stay behind and help with the trike," Sattler said.
"Sure," said the vet, pleased. "I have a gas powered jeep, I can drop her off at the Visitor Center."
"You sure?" Grant asked Sattler.
"Yes, I want to finish up," Sattler said.
"Ok then," Grant said. "We'll see you back at base." Edelweiss got back on her Dragon and they left the Triceratops.
They got back in the cars and headed on their way. The sun soon set and it started to rain. Edelweiss reached into her saddlebags and pulled out a black leather trench coat with seal fur on the sleeve cuffs. She put the coat on and buttoned it up. She then took off her fingerless gloves and put them in the pocket of the coat. She reached into the other pocked and pulled out a pair of regular leather gloves and put them on. These gloves had an inner lining of polar fleece. The final thing she pulled out was a black balaclava. She removed her hat, put the balaclava on, the put the hat back on. She was now well protected from the rain. Black Widow kept walking alongside the cars the whole time. The cars suddenly stopped dead.
"Now what?" Edelweiss asked.
"The power must be out," Black Widow said.
"We can fly back to the Visitor Center," Edelweiss suggested.
"I'm not going to try navigating through this rain," Black Widow said. "Plus I don't want to get hit by lighting."
"Very well," Edelweiss said. "Where are we any way?" They both looked around. There were a few street lights on, and they illuminated a tall fence.
"An, we're at the Bigtooth's pen," Black Widow said, pointing to the goat that was still there. Suddenly there came a very faint thud. Both Dragon and rider froze. The thud came again. Black Widow hissed. Edelweiss looked at a puddle on the ground. The thud came again and made ripples on the water. Edelweiss clicked the reins and Black Widow took off. They didn't go far, they just circled the road. From this height they could see the large T-Rex stomping towards the goat. It clamped its jaws around the goat, killing it at once. Then the T-Rex swallowed the goat in one bite, before turning its eyes on the two cars. It let out a growl. It couldn't see the Dragon, as her black scales hid her well. Suddenly Gennaro ran out of the lead car like a frightened mouse and headed for a convenient restroom, leaving the car door open.
"Man, humans are such babies," Black Widow said. "No offense."
"None taken," Edelweiss said. The wires of the fence suddenly snapped, leaving the way clear for the T-Rex. It exited the pen and sniffed about.
"Should we do anything?" Edelweiss asked.
"Em, not yet," Black Widow said. "I will let it have at least one snack before I chase it away." She circled the T-Rex. It turned towards the lead car where the two kids had been left. The Dinosaur was attracted by a light that suddenly appeared. It lowered its big head to try and see inside the windows. It could sense there was something inside the small box on wheels. It let out a loud roar. When it saw movement inside it grunted, satisfied. It thrusted its nose through the glass rough, pinning the two screaming kids to the seats. The T-Rex tried to get his food, but there seemed to be an invisible force in the way. The Dinosaur roared in frustration and tried again. But it failed a second time. Now very angry it withdrew its head and flipped the car over onto its back. The T-Rex planted its foot on the car to keep it in place, squashing it flat and trapping the kids inside. The T-Rex tried eating its way through the car, but everything it clamped its jaws around tasted horrible and dropped it. Suddenly Grant emerged from the other car and began waving a flare high above his head, and shouting at the T-Rex. The Dinosaur turned its attention to this new target and stomped over, forgetting the two kids. Grant waved the flare in the Dinosaur's face. Then threw in back into the pen. The T-Rex ran after it. Grant was about to go rescue Lex and Tim, when Malcolm came out of the car waving another flare stupidly. The T-Rex then stomped after him, determined to get food. It chased Malcolm towards the restroom where Gennaro was still hiding. The T-Rex rammed Malcolm into the wooden building, turning it match sticks. Gennaro now found himself exposed to the T-Rex. It looked down at him, hunger in its eye. Without hesitation it clamped its jaws around Gennaro, and ate him up.
Meanwhile Grant was pulling Lex out of the wrecked car. She got out of the car, took one look at the T-Rex, and screamed. Grant quickly covered her mouth.
"Don't move," he ordered. "Can't see us if we don't move." They two of them held perfectly still as the Dinosaur approached them. It stood there a second, then spun the wrecked car pointing it towards a section of the pen that was a sheer cliff. Grant and Lex tried to get out of the way but ended up trapped between the car and the wall. Grant hoisted Lex onto his back then climbed over the wall. He climbed down the wall using a cable. The T-Rex began pushing the car over the cliff, and the two humans were right its path. Grant spotted another cable close by. He swung towards it.
"Grab that line," he ordered Lex. She tried and failed to get the line. But Grant kept swinging towards it. She finally managed to grab the cable, just as the wrecked car fell right passed them into a tree below. The T-Rex roared in victory. But then suddenly a blast of red fire hit the Dinosaur in the side. It was so powerful that it knocked the T-Rex of its feet. It roared as it fell to the ground. It got back to its feet and began looking for the attacker. There came a loud screech. The Dinosaur saw the Dragon coming straight at it. It roared and tried snatching the Dragon out of the air. But Black Widow scratched its face with her back talons. She circled around and shot a stream of red flames at the T-Rex's feet. The Dinosaur backed off, still roaring. Black Widow continued firing at the T-Rex until it had had enough and ran off.
When it was long gone Black Widow landed. There were small fires burning all round. Edelweiss dismounted.
"That was amazing Black Widow," she said hugging her Dragon. It stopped raining. Edelweiss looked over the side of the wall. Grant and Lex were making their way to the bottom of the wall.
"How about you stay here and wait for the other humans," Black Widow said. "And I'll follow the humans that fell down there."
"No, I don't want to leave you," Edelweiss protested. "That man might try to kill you."
"Don't worry about me," Black Widow said. "He has no way of killing me." Edelweiss sighed and leaned against the wall. Black Widow nuzzled her rider.
"Besides," she said. "I recon these humans are going to try to separate us anyway."
"You're right," Edelweiss said. "Okay." She hugged her Dragon again. She buried her face into Black Widow's warm scales. Black Widow wrapped her wings around her.
"Please be safe," Edelweiss begged. "I don't want to loose you."
"It'll be okay," Black Widow assured. "We'll meet up again back at the Visitor Center."
"Okay," Edelweiss said. She let go. "I love you Black Widow." The Dragon nuzzled her again.
"I love you too," she said. Then she spread her wings and flew into the Dinosaur's pen. Edelweiss went over to the remaining car and sat on the hood.
Down in the pen Grant and Lex were at the base of the tree the wrecked car had landed in. There came a sound of snapping twigs, indicating that the limbs holding the car in place were about to give way. Grant turned to Lex who was wide eyed and shaking.
"It's okay," Grant said. "I'm going to look after you, but I need to go help your brother. I want you to stay right there."
"He left us, he left us," Lex said over and over.
"But that's not what I'm going to do," Grant said firmly. "Okay?" Lex gave her head a quick nod. Grant turned towards the tree but at that moment there came the sound of flapping wings and the thud of a landing animal. Grant turned back around and saw Black Widow the Dragon standing behind him. She looked at Grant, trying not to look threatening.
"What do you want?" Grant asked her. She narrowed her eyes at him. She then quietly approached him and lowered her head, giving him her most innocent look. Grant suddenly got an idea.
"Could you climb up the tree and get Timmy out?" he asked the Dragon. Black Widow looked up at the tree and the wrecked car. She tilted her head one way, then the other. She let out a small croak and flew up to the car. She landed on a branch next to the passenger door. She could see the small human laying on his side. Black Widow gently nudge him and croaked again. Tim flipped over so he was now facing the Dragon. He gasped. Black Widow opened her mouth showing her black teeth. Then she pulled her teeth into her gums, making her bite less dangerous. Timmy seemed to calm down a bit. Black Widow then pulled her teeth back out and used them and her claws to open the passenger door. She then put her teeth away. She looked Timmy in the eye again then moved in such away so her saddle was right in front of him. She looked over her shoulder at Timmy and gestured with her head for him to grab her saddle. Timmy slowly and carefully made his way out of the car and grabbed the saddle horn with both hands. He awkwardly climbed onto the saddle, just as the car slipped out of the tree and hit the ground with a crash. Both Timmy and Black Widow looked down at the car in awe. Timmy then looked up at Black Widow.
"Thank you Dragon," he said. The Dragon seemed to smile at him. She then spread her wings and glided off the tree. She glided to the ground and folded her wings. Grant and Lex ran to her side and helped Timmy dismount. Grant checked for any injuries. Grant turned to the Dragon.
"Thank you," he said humbly. Black Widow gave a nod.
Up on to of the wall Edelweiss was still sitting on the other car waiting. She didn't have to wait long. A security jeep arrived with Sattler and Muldoon. They stopped the jeep and got out. They both had flashlights. There were still fires burning and several scorch marks littered the ground. Edelweiss got up.
"Where's the other car?" Sattler asked, worried. She went up to Edelweiss and grabbed her shoulders.
"Where's the other car?" she snapped in the girl's face, shaking her. Edelweiss struggled to get free.
"Let me go," she cried. "You're hurting me." Sattler only gripped her tighter.
"What happened?" she demanded.
"The car went over the wall," Edelweiss said. "Black Widow fought off the Bigtooth, now let me go." She tried again to break free. Muldoon was looking at the remains of the restroom. He found what was left of the lawyer, and found Malcolm mangled up. He summoned Sattler over. She dragged Edelweiss with her over to the wrecked restroom. Then Sattler turned on her hostage again.
"Where's Alan and the kids? Where are they?" She shook Edelweiss hard.
"Ow, ow, you're hurting me," Edelweiss winded. Sattler ignored her.
"Where are they?" she almost shouted in Edelweiss's face.
"I don't know," Edelweiss said. "Black Widow went after them. Now will you please let me go?" Sattler released Edelweiss and turned her attention to Malcolm. Edelweiss ran as fast as she could to the jeep and leaned against it. She watched the other two attend to Malcolm's injuries.
When Malcolm was loaded onto the jeep Sattler and Muldoon began examine the wreckage the T-Rex had left behind. There were still many fires burning from the Dragon's fight with the Dinosaur. Sattler and Muldoon looked over the side of the wall and saw the wrecked car. Sattler grabbed Edelweiss again and dragged her into the pen and down into the ditch where the car was. Edelweiss kept struggling to get free. They went over to the car and looked for survivors. But they didn't find any bodies, only footprints leading away from the wreck. Three sets of footprints were obviously human, but one set was animal.
"You think a Dinosaur's stalking them?" Muldoon said.
"No those are Black Widow's footprints," Edelweiss said.
"You sent that Dragon after them!?" Sattler screamed at her. "That Dragon's dangerous."
"She is not," Edelweiss snapped back, still struggling. "It was her idea to split up, since she knew you guys were going to do it anyways. She went with Grant and the kids to make sure they get to the Visitor Center in one piece. I stayed behind to take the brutal beating and explain all this."
"Brutal beating?" Sattler repeated. Edelweiss glared down at Sattler's hands which were still clamped around her arms like shackles. She tried again to break free and failed. Then she stomped on Sattler's toes. That made Sattler releaser her, and she ran off as fast as she could towards the jeep. She stood next to it to wait. Sattler and Muldoon soon joined her. But at that moment the T-Rex burst out of the trees roaring. Muldoon and Sattler quickly got into the jeep and stepped on the gas. The jeep took off and the T-Rex gave chase. It kept up with the jeep quite easily. But the jeep went even faster and the Dinosaur soon gave up and stocked off. The jeep was soon out of sight.
Edelweiss stood next to the other tour car, the jeep had left her behind in their hurry. Suddenly the T-Rex approached her. It roared when it saw her. As a Dragon Rider Edelweiss wasn't afraid of the Dinosaur. It looked down at her and growled. Then Edelweiss wondered if the T-Rex could understand Dragontongue and decided to try.
"You must be really hungry," she said, in Dragontongue. "I know how you feel, I haven't eaten anything since lunch." The Dinosaur paused and looked her in the eye. Then it went closer and lowered its head.
"You seem different from the others," she said. Edelweiss lit up, her plan worked.
"I know, I get the feeling the others hate me," she said. "All because I ride a Dragon."
"You were on that Dragon?" the T-Rex asked. "The one who tried to kill me?"
"She wasn't trying to kill you," Edelweiss said. "She was trying to get you to leave. She could have killed you very easily. But if she had she would have been just as disgusting as the humans." The T-Rex growled.
"You don't like humans?" she said.
"No, one of them kept hurting me just a little while ago," Edelweiss said. "I don't want to kill them or hurt them, I don't want to have anything to with them." The T-Rex snorted in agreement.
"Can you help me?" Edelweiss asked. "I need to get back to the Visitor Center so I can meet up with Black Widow. Will you give me a lift?" The T-Rex considered.
"I don't know where that is?" she said finally.
"That's okay I can tell you where to go," Edelweiss said. "This thing here." she tapped her foot on the line the tour cars followed. "It goes all the way to the Visitor Center."
"Very well," the T-Rex said. She lowered her head a little bit more so Edelweiss could climb onto her neck. When she was in place the Dinosaur stood up, turned around, and followed the line back towards the Visitor Center.
Black Widow and the three other humans walked through the dense trees looking for a place to sleep. Grant led the way and Black Widow brought up the rear. No one said anything as they hiked towards a large tree.
"This looks safe enough," Grant said. "Come on up you go." The two kids proceeded to climb up the tree.
"I hate trees," Timmy complained.
"They don't bother me," Lex said in a very show offy tone. Black Widow snorted in annoyance.
"Yeah well you weren't in the last one," Timmy pointed out. But the three humans soon reached a branch large enough that they could all make themselves comfortable. Black Widow flew onto a different branch, wrapped her tail around it, and dangled upside down like a possum. She wrapped her wings around herself and fell asleep.
"Alan what if the Dinosaurs come back while we're all asleep?" Lex asked quietly.
"I'll stay awake," Grant answered.
"All night?" Lex asked.
"All night," Grant said. With that they too fell asleep.
Back at the Visitor Center Edelweiss had been dropped off by the T-Rex and was now sitting in the cafe. She had taken her gloves, hat, and balaclava off. She was feasting on crab and pastries. She was worried about her Dragon. She knew Black Widow could hold her ground against the Dinosaurs, but she didn't know what Grant would do to her if given the opportunity.
Edelweiss wasn't the only one in the cafe. Hammond was there as well, drowning his worried in ice cream. They were soon joined by Sattler. Edelweiss tensed up. She had bruises on her arms from where Sattler gripped her.
"How are you doing Edel?" Sattler asked.
"It's Edelweiss," she snapped. "No one calls me Edel except my family."
"Speaking of which," Sattler said. "Where's your parents?" Edelweiss narrowed her eyes.
"That is none of your business," she said. "You are a stranger to me, I'm not going to give you personal information about the ones I love."
"Do they know you're out here?" Sattler asked.
"Yes," Edelweiss said. "I learn thing by travailing the world on the back of a Dragon, instead of paying trillions of dollars just to sit in a class room and doze off."
"Don't you think you're putting too much trust in that Dragon?" Sattler asked. Edelweiss sighed.
"I don't care what you say," She said. "Black Widow is practically a sister to me. I love her more than anything, and nothing you say or do will change that." She got up from her chair and grabbed her hat.
"And if you try and separate us permanently," she went on. "We will starve ourselves to death until we find each other, either in this life or the next. Good Night." She put her hat on, grabbed her things, and left before Sattler could protest. Sattler then sat at Hammond's table.
The next morning Grant and the kids woke up and found a Brachiosaurus grazing from their tree. Lex shrieked and backed up.
"Go away!" she exclaimed.
"It's alright, it's a Brachiosaurus," Grant said. "It's a herbivore." The Dinosaur grabbed a mouthful of leaves and munched them absentmindedly. Grant grabbed a branch full of leaves and waved in front of the Brachiosaurus's face. She grabbed it and Grant pulled the branch towards him, thus pulling the Dinosaur's head towards him. Timmy petted its snout. Grant followed suit. The Brachiosaurus let out a groan of pleasure, enjoying the attention.
"Looks like it has a cold," Timmy said, pointing to the red, irritated skin around the Dinosaur's nostrils.
"Yeah, maybe," Grant said. Lex was hesitant.
"Can I touch it?" she asked.
"Sure," Grant said. "Just think of it is, kind of a big cow." The two kids laughed at this. Lex reached out to the Dinosaur, but then it sneezed all over Lex. She stood there, stunned in embarrassment.
"God bless you," Timmy called to it.
The Dinosaur went on its way and the three humans climbed down from the tree. Black Widow woke up and joined them. They slowly made their way towards the Visitor Center. They came into an open grassy area. Grant could now get his bearings. Suddenly Black Widow became alert and started growling. She spread her wings and flew off. The humans could now hear the sound of a stampede coming there way. They turned around to see a flock of Dinosaurs running right for them.
"Tim, can you tell me what they are?" Grant asked. Timmy started snapping his fingers trying to get his brain working.
"Gallimimus," he said finally. The Dinosaurs became level with them then turned in their direction.
"Look at the way they turn," Grant said, mostly to himself. "Just like a flock of birds evading a predator."
"They're eh, they're flocking this way," Timmy said nervously. The Gallimimus came running over the hill. They soon overwhelmed the humans, squawking in surprise. Grant and the kids ran for cover. Suddenly Black Widow dove out of the sky and pinned down a large Gallimimus. She killed it instantly with her venomous teeth. She had never had Dinosaur meat, but it smelled good. Grant and the kids found shelter behind a fallen tree. The Dinosaurs ran passed them and on their way. The humans watched the Dinosaurs go. Suddenly the T-Rex burst out of the trees and snagged a Gallimimus. The rest of the flock scattered and managed to escape the T-Rex. Grant and the kids slipped away before the T-Rex noticed them. They went back to where Black Widow was eating her own catch. She had used her fire to roast off the scales and cook the meat. She saw the humans leaving the meadow. She finished her breakfast and left the rest for scavengers. She hurried after them and they went back into the trees.
A while later there were just about to arrive at the fence around the Visitor Center. Then Grant spotted a bunch of eggshells between the roots of a large tree. He stopped and crouched over them. Lex and Tim turned to see what he was looking at. Black Widow paused as well.
"Do you know what this is?" Grant said, picking up a broken egg. "It's a Dinosaur egg. The Dinosaurs are breeding." He handed the eggshell to Tim.
"But Grandpa said all the Dinosaurs were girls," Tim said confused.
"Well," Grant said. "The film said they used frog DNA to complete the Dinosaur genetic code, and blended it with that of frogs. Now some West African fogs have been known to change gender from male to female in a single gender environment." He looked at a series of small footprints leading away from the nest.
"Ian was right," Grant continued. "Life found the way." They left the nest with this new knowledge. Black Widow ate all the eggshells and followed them.
They soon arrived at the outer electric fence that surrounded the Visitor Center. Grant picked up a stick and climbed onto the wall at the base of the fence. He threw the stick at the wire, nothing happened. He turned back to the kids and the Dragon.
"I guess that means the power's out," he said. He slowly reached out and grabbed the wire with is bare hands. Suddenly he let out a cry of pain and shock, which caused the two kids to panic. But then Grant shot them a smile, he was only joking. Black Widow snorted.
"Don't do that," Lex scolded.
"That was great," Timmy laughed as the same time. Grant got serious again and turned back to the fence. He looked for a way through it. Black Widow pulled her teeth into her gums and nudged Lex's hand. She looked at the Dragon, confused. Black Widow used her front paw to hold Lex's palm out, then licked it a few times. Lex yanked her hand away.
"What are you doing?" she demanded. Black Widow barked and quickly snagged Lex's other hand and licked that palm a few times before Lex yanked it back. Black Widow seemed satisfied. Timmy beamed.
"Do me next," he said holding both his hands out. Black Widow licked them several times. With that done Black Widow jumped onto the wall next to Grant. She licked his palms last. They all looked confused.
"What was that for?" Grant asked. Black Widow just huffed and turned towards the fence. Then the spider climbed up its web with expert speed and grace. She reached the top then glided down to the ground on the other side.
"Now I see why you're called Black Widow," Grant said. The Dragon gave him a smug smile. Grant and the kids then followed the Dragon's lead and climbed up the fence. They got to the top without incident. Grand and Lex managed to get down on the other side with Black Widow. But Timmy was still way up there. To make matters worse Sattler was back at the base restoring the power to the park. A siren blared, warning them that the fence was about to turn dangerous. Black Widow spread her wings and took off. She was just about to get to Timmy when the fence activated and zapped Timmy's hands. He fell off the fence and hit the ground hard. Grant and Lex rushed to Tim's side, he was unconscious. Grant quickly did CPR, and Lex burst into tears. Black Widow landed and folded her wings. She paced up and down. But then Timmy regained consciousness and coughed. He sat up gasping for air. He seemed okay which was quite lucky. But then Grant checked the burns on Tim's hands, and didn't find a single injury of any kind. Grant was surprised and confused.
"There should be burns here," he said. Timmy looked at his hands. They were dirty and red from climbing, but not burned. Black Widow let out a croon and they all looked at her. She licked her lips.
"Is that why you licked all our hands before climbing?" Grant asked. Black Widow nodded her head once. The she pointed her head towards the sky and shot out a blast of red fire.
"Oh I get it," Timmy said weakly. "The Dragon's saliva is fireproof, it keeps her mouth and tongue from getting burned every time she breathes fire." Black Widow purred looking pleased with herself. Grant got to his feet and Lex helped her brother to his feet and let him lean on her.
"It seems I misjudged you," Grant said to the Dragon. He held his hand out. "Thank you." Black Widow put her snout in his hand.
"Can we get out of here now?" Lex asked.
"Yes," Grant said. Black Widow knelt down so Timmy could get on her back. When he was secure in her saddle she got up again. The made their way towards the Visitor Center.
When they got there they entered the building through the cafe. Black Widow squeezed in after them.
"Hello!" Grant called. "Anyone here?" There came no answer. They went towards a nearby table and Grant helped Timmy off the Dragon and put him on the table.
"I'm going to go find the others," Grant said heading for the door. "You guys wait here. Black Widow will you keep an eye on them?" Black Widow nodded. Grant left and headed for the rest of the base. Black Widow suddenly sniffed the air, she could smell food. She and the kids turned towards the table that had plates of food on it. They went over and picked out food. Lex found many fruits and vegetables, Timmy found pastries. Black Widow sniffed the food looking for meat. But all she found was fruits, vegetables, and bread. She crooned sadly. Timmy noticed and assisted the Dragon. He lifted the lid of a bowel of crab meat.
"There you go," Tim said. Black Widow purred again and ate up the crab meat. Lex and Timmy sat at a table and ate up. Black Widow ate the crab meat and gave her a much needed energy boost. But then suddenly her animal instances were on red alert. She turned around and faced the door. She took a fighting stance and growled. Lex and Timmy followed her gaze. A shadow crossed the window, it was the shadow of a Utahraptor. Both kids jumped to their feet. The raptor growled and headed for the doors. Black Widow looked at the two kids and they looked back at her. The door to the kitchen caught her eye. She pushed the two kids towards the kitchen. They didn't hesitate and ran into the kitchen. Black Widow turned her attention to the Dinosaur. It burst into the room and its eyes met the Dragon's. They both growled. Black Widow knew she couldn't use her fire, that would burn the building down. So she would have to use her claws and tail. The Dragon and the Dinosaur stared at each other. Black Widow headed for the main lobby, the raptor followed. The minuet they were clear of the tables the raptor attacked. It jumped at Black Widow, but she swung around and slammed the raptor with her tail. It screeched as it hit the wall. As it got to its feet Black Widow struggled out of her saddle and bridle. Then she faced the Dinosaur again. The Dragon and the Dinosaur circled each other, gnashing their teeth and snarling. Then they both pounced at the same time.
Outside Grant hiked through the base looking for the others. He called for them and got no answer. But then he came out of the trees and spotted Sattler running towards him. He ran towards her. She seemed really happy to see him. They embraced each other for several minuets. Then Sattler led Grant back to an emergency bunker where Hammond, Malcolm, and Edelweiss were hiding. When they got there they filled each other in on what happened. The two Utahraptors had escaped while the power was out and had already killed two men, one of which was Muldoon. Sattler had turned the power back on, while running for her life from the raptors. Grant told them about their hike back to the Visitor Center.
"Where's my Dragon?" Edelweiss asked. "I hope you didn't kill her."
"Why would I kill her?" Grant asked. "She saved Timmy's live, twice." Edelweiss looked surprised.
"Really?" she asked.
"She got him out of the wrecked car in the tree, and prevented him from getting electrocuted," Grant said. Edelweiss smiled with pride.
"But where is she now?" she asked.
"With Lex and Timmy," Grant said, grabbing a machine gun. "In the Visitor Center." Then he turned to Sattler.
"It's just the one raptor?" he asked. "The other one's contained?"
"Yes," said Sattler. "Unless they figured out how to open doors." Grant loaded his gun.
"Let's go get those kids and call for help," he said. Sattler couldn't agree more. They both left the bunker while Hammond addressed Malcolm's injuries. Edelweiss suddenly got an idea. She snuck out of the bunker and out into the trees.
"Now where's that Bigtooth?" she said to herself.
Back at the Visitor Center the Dragon and the Dinosaur were still fighting. The raptor was very light on its feet. It kept dodging Black Widow's lunges. What she didn't know was that the raptor had an secret weapon so to speak, a friend. The second raptor entered the cafe and snuck over to the kitchen door. It used its front claws to turn the handle and pushed the door open with its head. It entered the kitchen and sniffed the air. It could smell fear and sweat. It threw back its head and let out a series of loud barks, summoning its crony. The raptor fighting Black Widow heard the call and unleashed all its fury on the Dragon. It jumped at her head, knocking her out. Black Widow fell to the floor feeling humiliated. The raptor joined the other one in the kitchen. They both stood in the doorway and looked around. Timmy and Lex were scared out of calling for the Dragon. The two raptors walked along the counter. The two kids crawled away as fast as they could, the raptors began sniffing them out. The two raptors and the two kids went from aisle to aisle, performing a cat and mouse chase. Then Timmy got too scared to move any further. Lex was at the end of the counter and kept trying to get him to move, but he just froze as the raptors came closer. Lex saw that they were about to find Timmy and banged a ladle on the floor to distract them. The raptors turned their attention to her. She crawled into a cabinet and tried to close the door but it was stuck. One of the raptors saw her reflection in the cabinet opposite hers. Thinking it was the real thing the raptor pulled out all its claws, let out a human like scream, and charged. But then it hit the cabinets hard and fell over. Lex crawled away. Meanwhile Timmy had spotted the open freezer. He looked behind him and saw the other raptor. He then ran as fast as he could towards the freezer. The raptor cased after him. They both ran into the freezer and both slipped on the ice on the floor. Timmy quickly got to his feet and ran out of the freezer. He closed the door, just as the raptor ran at it and tried to keep it from closing. Lex joined her brother at the freezer door and helped him close it, tapping the raptor inside. With both raptors stunned the kids ran out of the kitchen. In the cafe they ran into Grant and Sattler.
"They're in there?" Lex said, pointing towards the kitchen.
"Where's the Dragon?" Grant asked. At that moment Black Widow joined them looking dizzy. She shook her head to clear it.
"Where were you the whole time?" Lex snapped. Black Widow glared at her and snorted.
"Control room now," Grant ordered. They hurried through the building to the control room where they could reboot the system and get the phones working. Black Widow stayed in the lobby as one of the raptors came out. It saw the Dragon and growled. Black Widow growled back. The other raptor came out and saw the Dragon as well. Black Widow looked at her opponents and took up a fighting stance. The two raptors moved in a pincer movement. Black Widow shot a small fire blast at the the raptors. They jumped in surprise. Then one of them shot passed the Dragon, after the humans. Black Widow was about to go stop it, but the other raptor jumped on her back. She bucked around trying to get the raptor off. She succeeded and the raptor was thrown to the ground. It jumped to it feet and charged at Black Widow, but she was ready.
In the control room Grant, Sattler, and the kids had just closed the door. Sattler was at a computer trying to get the phones working. Grant was examining the door for a way to lock it.
"The door locks," he called to Sattler, he found the lock but it could only be activated by computer. "Ellie the door locks." He looked through the window of the door and came face to face with one of the raptors. It gave him a wild look and turned the handle. Grant grabbed the handle and pushed against the door to keep the raptor from getting inside. Sattler abandoned the computer and went to help. Lex turned her attention to the computer. She sat in the chair and began clicking away at different files. Timmy began dancing on the spot anxiously. Sattler stayed glued to the door and tried to get the gun, which as next to her foot. Lex continued working on the computer. And at long last she managed to get the system working again. She got to work locking the doors, keeping the raptor out. Grant and Sattler ran to the computer.
"What works?" Grant asked.
"Everything," Lex said. Grant grabbed a nearby phone and called the bunker where Malcolm and Hammond was. Hammond picked up the phone.
"Yes," Hammond said.
"John, the phones are working," Grant said.
"Are the children alright?" Hammond asked.
"They're fine," Grant assured. "Call the mainland and tell them to send the helicopters." He quickly put the phone down when he heard the raptor coming through the window of the rotating floor with seats. Grant fired his gun but missed. Then Grant, Sattler, and the kids escaped through the ventilation shaft. They crawled through the ceiling and headed for the exit which came out over the lobby. Suddenly Lex was hoisted into air by the raptor sticking his head into the ceiling. Grant kicked the raptor's head which caused it to loose is footing and fall to the floor. They finally made it to the exit and climbed down onto the Brachiosaurus fossil in the middle of the lobby. Down below Black Widow was still fighting the second raptor. The humans suddenly heard a roar and turned to see their raptor about to jump onto the fossil. It did so and the fossil broke in pieces. The humans dropped to the floor, followed by the raptor. They were now being cornered by it. Black Widow abandoned the other raptor and ran in front of the humans, guarding them from both raptors. The raptors roared and flashed their teeth. The Dragon did the same. They jumped at her but she shot fire blasts at them, knocking them back. The readied themselves for another attack when one of them was suddenly snatched up by the T-Rex. This gave Grant and the others the chance to make their escape. Black Widow attacked the other raptor and killed it with her venomous teeth.
"Black Widow," came a familiar cry. The Dragon turned to see her beloved rider running towards her from behind the T-Rex. Black Widow ran to her.
"You brought the Bigtooth here?" she asked as Edelweiss threw her arms around her neck. Then she quickly saddled Black Widow up again.
"Yes," said Edelweiss as she tightened the straps. "Turns out Dinosaurs understand Dragontongue. Lets get out of here." She mounted her Dragon and rode out of the building, but just before they exited Edelweiss turned around.
"Thank you," she called to the T-Rex. The Dinosaur looked at her and let out a loud roar. Then Dragon and rider ran outside and after the jeep that had just taken off.
They arrived at the helicopter pad where a chopper was waiting for them. Grant and Sattler helped Malcolm into the chopper. Hammond was looking back in the direction of the park, knowing he would never see it again. Black Widow looked over her wing at her rider.
"Where should we go next?" she asked. Edelweiss considered.
"I don't know," she said. "Somewhere there are no humans." Hammond then got on the chopper and it took off. Black Widow spread her wings and followed. They soon left the island far behind. Inside everyone was quiet, happy to be alive. Sattler and Grant stared at each other, smiling. Then Sattler looked out the window at something. Grant followed her gaze and saw a flock of brown pelicans flying low over the water, alongside Black Widow and Edelweiss.
The sun set as the chopper headed back towards Costa Rica. But Edelweiss and Black Widow soon grew tired of following it. They turned and headed in their own direction. Black Widow picked up speed and they headed off to have more adventures, just the two of them.
