Woodland's Animal Shelter

Teacher's Pet

Chapter 1

Woodland's Animal Shelter is normally busy time around Christmas, but it was unusually quite today. There were no noisy barking dogs in the waiting room, no visitors fussing over the animals in Pet's Corner or even any cars parked in the newly gravelled car park. But there was one sound that everybody was dreading, the sound of her car horn announcing her arrival.

Everyone stopped. She had arrived early. Some darted to greet their guest while others did their best to help tidy up. The handle of the kitchen door turned slowly and a black silhouette entered forcing her very large bags through the tightly squeezed gap.
"What does a lady have to do around here to get a little help?" She asked rudely.
Korben rushed over to help pull the luggage free but as he reached the door the bags were released and he was walloped over the head.

He picked himself up and dusted himself of with help from him mother Angie. She didn't look to impressed, she had only just finished ironing the school uniform he was wearing two minutes ago and they were already creased.
"You, you just stop mucking around and get going your bus will be here any minute now and I'm not taking you in again if you miss it. Just think 4 more days and your off for 3 weeks!" She said.

Korben stood freezing at the bus stop waiting patiently for Jack, as he did every morning. Korben had known Jack since he was 4, and were in same class at school. They did everything together and considered each other as brothers. As usual Jack came plodding along the street dragging his bag behind him still half asleep.
