Like red on a rose
When your lips first smiled at me
I was captured instantly

"Thousands a Troops Sent to the Philippines," he shouted loudly above the noise of bustling, chatting people and the crackling of carriage wheels against cobblestone. He glanced around at the passersby, and, seeing that his headline was not enticing any buyers, decided to add a little bit of his own twist. "Bloody Battles Rage On." This brought a few men over his way. When they'd left, he counted the coins in his hand. 10 pennies. Not bad, he thought to himself. Course I'd probably better get outta here before some a those guys decide they want their money back...

He took off slowly down the street, quick enough to disappear before anyone would notice they'd been tricked but slow enough so as not to draw attention to himself. A few blocks later, he stopped and began to call out headlines once again.

"Thousands a Troops…" he stopped abruptly, turning to see where the light tap on his shoulder had come from. His eyes rose to meet gaze of one of the most beautiful girls he'd ever seen. She wore a long elegant white dress with a wide navy ribbon around the waist, and a dainty blue hat rested upon her auburn curls.

"Excuse me boy, may I have a paper," she asked, in a melodic voice that sounded like that of an angel's. Well, at least he thought so.

He shuffled through his stack of papers nervously, and handed her the least creased one he could find.

He'd barely managed to squeak out a "there you go miss," when her perfect red lips formed into the most enchanting smile he'd ever seen. At that moment, any coherent thought left in his head evaporated into thin air.

"Thank you," she replied softly. He'd planned on saying something, anything, that might make her return to his corner tomorrow, but all he could manage was a mumbled good day as she turned and left.

Once she had disappeared around the corner, he snapped out of his abnormal and trance-like state. He ran his hand through his hair, letting out a low sigh. He shook his head, trying to erase the image from his mind. What was he thinking? One, rich girls didn't give a damn about street rats like him, and two, a brief conversation about buying a paper was hardly grounds to fall for a girl over. Yet, he was, or at least he thought so. He just couldn't get those perfect red lips out of his head…couldn't get her out of his head. He was captivated.

Author's Note: Well, this is just a little short 3 chapter sappy little romance I wrote for valentines day, but obviously I got busy and that didn't happen, so now it's just up cause I was bored tonight and felt like posting. If you should so like to continue with the sappiness, read on! (Oh, and review too!)

Disclaimer: I don't own newsies or the newsies used in my story. Unfortunately I can't tell you which one is the main character because that would ruin my plan to make you read this whole thing, see, you don't find out till chapter 3 - HAH!
