Eyes of Stars
"Well, the lady wished for a date and the wish shall be granted!" Zack grinned. They met at the outside of the city when the sun was setting on the horizon, painting the sky a vivid orange and pink.
"I don't seem to remember asking that…" Aerith laughed. "It's just a picnic."
Zack pouted, but he was happy all the same. Just being with Aerith was good enough for him, even if she refused to call it a date. She led him to the church, and Zack noticed they were both empty-handed.
"I'm not sure, but don't picnics usually have food?"
"This isn't a picnic?"
"I don't think so…"
"I see... but just because this isn't a picnic, doesn't mean you can leave just yet!"
"Boy oh boy, the price of freedom is steep."
Aerith smiled and took his hand, leading him to her small garden of flowers. They sat down in the grass where the remains of sunlight shone through the roof. Realizing Aerith was still holding his hand, Zack chuckled. Not a date. Right.
"You know, I met this soldier the other day, Cloud. He kind of reminded me of myself in the older days when I was training."
"Oh, did he like to flirt too? And did he have crazy spiky hair?"
"It's not called flirting when the girl doesn't reject a date, but he just had his eyes infused with mako energy."
"He must have nice blue eyes."
"He's nothing like me. He might have blue eyes, but they aren't as beautiful as mine," he said, staring straight into Aerith's face so she would get his point.
"Oh, stop." she said playfully as she pushed Zack away. "But if he isn't like you, then he must be gentlemanly."
"You think I can't be a gentleman? Sure, I can. I've been one to you dozens of times..."
"Really? Can you prove that?"
Zack stared into space, trying to think of a time, and Aerith started laughing. "H-hey…" he stuttered, and noticed something caught into Aerith's hair. His hand reached out to brush it off, and he realized it was a flower petal.
"How's that? Isn't that what you call gentlemanly?"
"I bet Cloud would have done that too." Aerith laughed, shivering as the wind blew.
"Would he have done this..?"
Zack leaned over and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close to his chest.
"W-What are you doing?" she exclaimed, blushing.
"I'm keeping you warm. Sorry, I don't have a jacket to give you."
"I-I'm fine, so-"
"Oh, alright then." He started unwrapping his arms.
"W-wait!"
Zack smirked, "I thought you didn't like hugs."
"No, it's just… I'm still cold."
"Sure," Zack said, pulling her back into his arms. The sun was setting now, and stars began to appear in the sky.
"Is it alright for you to be here with me?"
"I took the day off."
"Just to spend the day with me? You might be a gentleman after all, Zack."
"That's what I've been trying to prove all along," he laughed.
Aerith gazed at his mako infused blue eyes as she leaned toward his face. The night sky reflected on his eyes, and it was as if they merged with the stars.
Zack could feel his heart almost leap out of his chest, wondering what she was going to do. A moment of silence passed where the two sat together, breath mingling and eyes studying each other's face. Aerith looked from eyes to lips, and she eventually leaned in and kissed him.
Zack reached out to take her face in his hands, but she was pulling away from him.
"Wha…"
Aerith giggled, and stood up. "Thanks for the date!" She took off, dashing through the flowers and making her way outside.
"D-date?!" he said excitedly, and then realized that his so-called 'date' was about to run away. "Hey, wait for me!"
They chased each other under the darkness of twilight.
