Chlo Grainger awoke early to the sound of her eldest daughter Izzie knocking on her bedroom door. Her husband Donte sat up slowly, rubbing a hand through his hair.
"What time is it?" He groaned, pushing himself up on the pillows.
"Half past six." Sighed Chlo; brushing her tangled hair out her eyes.
Izzie, getting impatient, pushed open the door and clambered onto Chlo and Donte's bed.
"Mum, dad wake up!" She cried excitedly.
Chlo forced herself to sit up and swing her legs out of bed.
"It's early Izzie." Chlo whispered, you'll wake everybody up!"
"But mummy, it's my birthday." She laughed.
"Like you'd let me forget." Chlo muttered, brushing Izzie's light brown hair away from her tanned face.
Slowly she stood up and crossed the room to the door. Shall we get breakfast and make daddy a cup of tea before we unwrap any presents?" Chlo suggested; taking her daughter by the hand and leading her down the cream carpeted stairs to the hallway bellow. The hallway was covered in cream wallpaper patterned with purple flowers. At the top of the hall was the door to the kitchen. The kitchen was small with wooden cabinets and grey worktops. There was hardly any room inside but it was good enough to cook in, as long as there was only two people in at a time. On the opposite side of the kitchen was another door which lead into a small dining room, the dining room floor was covered by laminate and in the middle stood a big wooden table. On the window ledge, which looked out into the small overgrown garden, sat a picture of Chlo's mother and her partner, Tom and Izzie. Next to this was a photo of Izzie as a baby, beside this sat a photo of Chlo and Donte's other child; Lily.
Just then the sound of Lily's feet pounding down the stairs could be heard.
Lily shot into the kitchen after Chlo and Izzie. Lily was three, she had long, straight blonde hair which fell down her back almost to her elbows and her skin was pale and freckled like her mothers. She was clothed in pink pyjamas patterned with little red hearts. Her eyes sparkled bright blue as she looked at her mother and big sister with excitement.
"Are we going to see Dean and granddad later?" She cried excitedly.
Dean was Mika and Brett's son, he was four years old and was Lily's best friend.
"Yes, were all going to granddads for tea because it's Izzie's birthday." Chlo confirmed. "Now, shall we have breakfast?"
Slowly she began to load bread into the toaster. A few moments later Donte entered the kitchen, he had pulled on a pair of jeans and a plain white T-shirt.
"Morning babe." He grinned; leaning over to peck Chlo on the cheek.
Chlo smiled up at him.
"It's all gone so fast, hasn't it? Eight years ago, it all seems so surreal looking back." She whispered.
"I never imagined we'd be like this in eight years time, so happy with another baby. I thought it'd all be over and we'd never see each other again, but things have turned out just right haven't they?" He muttered.
Chlo nodded happily.
"I can't imagine my life without them, or you." She smiled, reaching up on her toes to kiss Donte. He wrapped his arms around her and they just stood there for a few moments, holding each other.
"Can I open my presents now?" Begged Izzie, making her way back into the kitchen. Chlo laughed and pulled herself away from Donte.
"Things have definitely changed." She sighed, following Izzie into the living room to unwrap her presents.
