Silence
It all happens so fast, as is the case with most tragedies. But even so, time seems to slow to a crawl. The remnants of laughter have not quite left his face. For a fleeting moment, Remus sees the shadow of a boy he once knew. He sees wild grey eyes and wanton smiles and a penchant for mischief. Perhaps there will be hope for Sirius -- for both of them -- when this is all over.
But hope fades.
A beam of ruddy light collides with Sirius's chest, lifting him into the air. His eyes -- which speak of unmasked grief and suffering -- widen in surprise. He falls slowly, his body curving into a graceful arc. (He is entirely too thin, Remus notes.) Black hair, bereft of its old shine, fans outwards, and the pale column of his throat lies exposed. In that moment, Sirius looks so very old. In that moment, he looks so young.
And then he disappears behind the ragged veil. It flutters lightly before falling still with an odd finality.
Silence descends like death.
