AN : An idea that came to me as the teaser for season 2 kept rolling in my head. Set in the aftermath of Katherine's declaration, presumably to Damon. "The truth is I never loved you".
Well, this is my idea of the following conversation between Damon and Elena...
Of first moves
"I thought you could handle her"
He looked at her.
"I'm sorry, Elena. She is Katherine."
She saw Damon closing down. She got closer and cupped his chin in her hand.
"Damon"
He would not look at her.
"Damon"
She would not let him. Elena needed to snap him out of this distressed trance.
"Damon. You're being extra broody." she singsonged.
He nearly gaped at her. Elena had a genial smile.
"Tell me. What happened ?"
To tell the truth, Damon was absolutely amazed at how similar to his own Elena's method had just been. Feeling his hopes raise, he answered.
"She gave me what I asked for. She told me the truth."
"And the truth is ?"
Leave it to Elena to ask for the worst in that soft, comforting, undeniable voice. Knowing at once he really loved her, he uncovered to her the shocking news Katherine had thought would be fun to be delivered.
"The truth is she never loved me."
"What is she doing here then ?"
Damon felt like shutting down all over again.
"She is here for Stefan"
Elena's heart jumped in her chest ; he heard it. He was turning away ; Elena stopped him, holding him in her arms around his neck.
"I'm sorry."
It felt so right, her warm embrace filling the void Katherine had just wanted to recreate. That was exactly when it dawned on him. Elena kept making the first move.
