The crimson blood was sickeningly bold, far bolder than any red paint, where it smeared across pale skin. It looked like some morbid abstract painting.

Dean hated it. Hated his brother's skin was the canvas. His gaze traveled the length of Sam's body, cataloging every burn, every cut, his ire rising exponentially. Sam's glassy eyes spoke of a surfeit of pain.

He approached and knelt down, ignoring his own considerable aches and pains. He gently pushed Sam's hair back, away from his face. "Sorry it took so long to get here, Sammy." He started undoing the chains. "We're okay now."
