Give Me Wings

Chapter 1

I, a girl of fifteen held my mother's hand. She was taking me to away from our house, and away from my abusive father. We had taken a plane to New York and I was to be taken to live with friends. We were walking along the streets of the east village. And then my mother stopped in front of a shabby apartment complex. She sighed and we walked inside.

The outside looked no better than the inside. Graffeti of different colors colored the walls. We walked up a few flights of stairs and my mother knocked stopped before apartment number 67. She looked at me and gave me a reassuring smile. I smiled shyly back. A strand of my blonde hair fell into my face and I brushed it away with a pale hand. My mother knocked. A couple moments later a brunnette haired woman answered the door. She smiled at us.

'Hey, Christine! How are you?' she said with a smile to my mother.

My mother set down the one suitcase I was allowed to pack.

'I'm fine Maureen. But, I have a favor to ask. Its really important. Um, could we come inside?' my mother said.

Maureen's gaze met mine and she smiled at me. 'Yes, come in.'

She carried my suitcase inside and set it on a small couch. I gazed around the room. I glanced around the room. It had a comferting feeling. And for once I actually felt safe. I felt that my father would find me here or hurt me anymore. My mother sat on the couch beside my black suitcase without asking permission. I sat on the bare floor. Maureen glanced at my mother. While she was looking away I took her in. She was wearing a black tank top and tight black pants.

'So, what's the favor?' she asked.

'I need you to take in Dawn, my daughter. I hate to part with her but, its for the better. You see her father is abusive not just to me but her. That's the reason why she's wearing that white long-sleeved shirt, he left marks on her both mentally and physically. I should forwarn you that it will take some time for her to ever trust a man again. She fears any man she sees. She is sweet and won't cause you a lot of harm. Could you please take care of my baby?' my mother asked.

Tears swam into my eyes. So, this was it. This was what probably would be good-bye. I might not even see her again. I wiped the tears away quickly. I had to be strong. I could live under Maureen's care if necessary. I could do this.

'You do know that I really am not financially stable.' Maureen said hesitantly.

'I know. I'll...I'll send money when I can. Just please take care of her.' my mother's sorrowful voice pleaded.

'Okay.' Maureen said.'

My mother nodded and walked over to me. She knelt in front of me. I looked into her blue eyes.

'Honey, you know how you kept praying you'll get wings so that you could fly away. Well, this is the best I can do to make your prayer come true. Its not a ending or a way out. Your father may find you here. But, you will be safe with my high school friend Maureen for now.' mother said seriously.

She gave me a hug and I returned it with a tight hug. I did not want her to leave. Father could hurt her too. What about you? I thought silently. She stood up, thanked Maureen and walked out the door. Little did I know she was walking out of my life.
