AN: Another old piece of writing I did for a Harry Potter project that fell through, this time a poem. The character is Helena McKavett, a made up Order of the Phoenix member.

"The Night Will Only Know"

The sun rises, the moon sets.

Night leaves and we try to forget

the screams, the cries,

the empty young eyes.

We smile, we laugh, we play, we forget.

We won't remember those we failed

and the stinging regret.

Not now, not 'til the night.

Here, we'll shine

for we are brave, if only in the light.

No one need know the dreams of the mind.

We'll never mention the bodies we couldn't find.

We smile, we laugh, we play, we forget.

We won't remember those we failed

and the stinging regret.

Not now, not 'til the night.

We, the Order, valiantly fight the Dark.

But I, the Phoenix, never more want to see that Mark.

This Phoenix made a pledge to die,

but this time, this fight, I must say goodbye.

They smile, they laugh, they play, they forget.

They won't remember those they failed

and the stinging regret.

Not now, not 'til the night.

The goals of this Order, so noble, so true..

They seems so wonderful, but is this the right thing to do?

The practitioners of the Arcane who condemn the impure..

I can't understand their obsession with this social slur.

They smile, they laugh, they play, they forget.

They won't remember those they failed

and the stinging regret.

Not now, not 'til the night.

The moon rises, the sun sets.

Light leaves and they can no longer forget

the screams, the cries,

the empty young eyes.

They frown, they yell, they fight, they die.

It's time to fail, and the regret makes them cry.

Here, in the dark of the night.

The enemy knows when they'll arrive there.

It will be a slaughter; the odds are so unfair.

I keep my eyes upon the floor.

I should help, but it's not my fight anymore.

They frown, they yell, they fight, they die.

It's time to fail, and the regret makes them cry.

Here, in the dark of the night.

The curses stop and I see His sign.

Deep in my heart, I pray that they're fine.

Even if they're not, there's nothing I can do.

Hufflepuffs - we can't always be just and true.
