Lennie begged "le's do it now. Le's get that place now"
"Sure, right now, I gotta, we gotta" George replied, trying to sound positive but failing
"George. What's wrong, George?"
"I'm sorry, Lennie"
"For what"
"For…" George voice faulted. Hearing the voices of the others getting nearer, George continued. "For… all those times I hurt you. It was wrong of me. I will get that land, but right now run, Lennie, run to those hills and find a cave. I'll find you"
"But, George, why"
"Lennie, Curly is after you. He wants to kill you"
"But George…'
"No buts go and find a cave and stay there"
"Ok George. I'll go find a cave. I met you there"
"Good boy, Lennie, go now"
"Bye George" Lennie said running in the direction of the hills, towards the voices.
"Bye………….Lennie' George replied, a note of sadness in his usually composed voice.
Then just as they had done when they first arrived at this place, George sat looking over the water, back to the voices growing louder in frustration. Then silence surrounded George, as if everything was waiting for something to happen. Then a gunshot was fired distantly, and George broke down and wept.
Several months later, George sat on his front porch, watching the chickens, running and eating and contemplating what had happened in the last couple of months.
After Lennie's death, Curley was placed under arrest for murder. To stop more disputes, the boss gave George pay up front and sent him on his way. Realizing he was going, Candy set up he's resignation and left with George go buy the land and house just as he ha promised Lennie and George those weeks before hand.
"Hey George, nice house" said slim walking up the drive with candy.
"Slim, nice to see ya. How's things going at the ranch' replied George, losing his chain of thought.
"A 'right, the boss is pretty stressed with Curly's trial coming up.
"I'm sure. Candy did you get what I asked for"
"Yes it's in the cage out back"
"What's this' asks Slim
"Well we bought some rabbits, but they were all females, so Candy went up to get another one. Male of cause.'
"Of cause. So, what you calling it"
"Lennie" replied Candy " I hope you don't mine, George. I knew how fond you were of him."
"No, that's fine" say's George, looking away. "So, why ya here"
"Well" says slim growing cheerful "I'm wanting a job"
"Why, you have one up at the ranch" George says turning his head to look at Slim.
"Yeah, I know, but the boss is blaming what has happened on the rest of us. I couldn't take it any more, so I asked for my pay and left."
"And" proms Candy.
"I want to work for you George," says Slim still smiling
"Slim, Don't work for me, and work with me"
"When can I start?" Slim asked curiously
"Now" says Candy handing him some chicken feed.
