A chill ran down his spine and his heart leaped in his chest. It was a curious feeling, and one he didn't typically have drinking beer with his mates. He gulped down his mouthful of beer and turned toward the pub door, just in time to see a swirl of black hair and the hem of a white dress before the door slammed shut.
Rising from the bench and the scrubbed wooden table, Robin crossed the pub and opened the door, peering down the alleyway. He looked left and then right, finally catching sight of the slim figure of a woman racing down the alley. It was undoubtedly the same woman; her hair, black as night, trailed behind her as she ran.
Behind him his mates roared with laughter, calling him back to the table with bribes of fresh ale. With a laugh Robin turned, shut the door behind him, and returned to his table, the black-haired woman forgotten for now.
