This is my very first fan fic. I've read a lot of these wonderful stories and thought I would try my hand. Let me know what you think.

This story is set at the end of Season 4, what might have happened just before and just after Mei Lin left.

Jean and Me Lin sat opposite each other at the kitchen table, each nursing a cup of tea. Over the past couple f days since the murder of Derek Alderton had been solved they had built a rocky, but usable, bridge. Each knew that the other loved Lucien; Mei Lin in her memories of her life with him before the war, and Jean, who had come to love the damaged but driven man she looked after each day.

Mei Lin broke the silence; 'Do you love him?'

Jean took a deep breath, looked the wife of the man she loved unconditionally in the eye and said 'With all my heart.'

Mei Lin took Jean's hand in hers and smiled, 'I'm glad. Lucien was a loving husband but seventeen years have changed us both. I will always cherish our times together but I know we must now go our separate ways. This, Ballarat and you are where he belongs.'

'Mei Lin, if you are saying that you will give Lucien his freedom; a divorce; I will give him all I am and that you and Li are always welcome here.' Jean smiled that soft smile that had endeared her to Lucien, the one that showed her approval of his actions.

In that moment the two women created an unbreakable bond through their love of one man. They talked of their love of the people in their lives, Li, Christopher, Jack until the sound of a car on the drive broke their conversation.

Lucien, wisely remaining in his study while the two women, talked came into the kitchen, 'Car's here Mei Lin!' She took his outstretched hand and they proceeded up the hall, collecting her suitcases on the way.

Jean followed at a distance, unsure of what would happen next.

Outside, Mei Lin bade Jean goodbye and as she leaned in she whispered 'Take care of yourself, and him.'

Mei Lin moved to Lucien by the car, saying her goodbyes and letting him know they should now go their separate ways.

As the car disappeared down the drive Jean and Lucien moved together. Lucien took her hand and looked into her eyes, they drew together and Jean reached round the back of his head and as he pulled her close they kissed.

They parted, almost surprised at what had just happened. 'Jean I need to ask you something...' Jean took his hand and led him into the house, closing the door behind them. She looked into his eyes, reached behind his head with both her hands and pulled him into a long, passionate kiss. After the briefest pause he responded. As they broke for air, Lucien raised his eyebrows and said 'That's a yes then?!'

Jean leaned against his chest and they walked together into the studio. Earlier, Jean had lit the fire against the cool of the day. It had been a very eventful time in their lives and she felt an overwhelming need to sleep.

Lucien guided her to the big Chesterfield couch and they sat together, arms around each other, Jean against his shoulder. They sat in companionable silence until Lucien noticed that Jean's head had slipped down onto his chest, her breathing shallow and regular. She had fallen asleep. He smiled, lifted his legs so he was lying on the couch and pulled her alongside him. Within minutes he too was asleep.

Charlie entered the silent house, wondering where Lucien and Jean were. He knew Me Lin had gone and was surprised not to find them in the kitchen or sitting room. Rather than call out he looked in the downstairs rooms ending up at the studio door. He paused, then pushed the door ajar. He was about to call out 'Doc!', but stopped short at the sight of the Doctor and his housekeeper asleep in each other's arms on the couch. Charlie smiled and closed the door quietly. All well here, he thought.
