It was deep into the night when a haggard woman made a slow and stumbling journey to the children's home on the edge of town. When the uneven flagstones covering the path caught her feet many times, she silently cursed the moonless night, and all else in this world that seemed to have all gone against her, clutching the bundle in her arms closer to her chest for reassurance.

A light in the orphanage flickered to life when she knocked on the door with waning strength. Trying to slip into the dark of night before the door was opened, she set the child down on the doorstep, then hurried away with trembling legs. Legs that soon betrayed her. Falling hard only a few buildings away, the last sight the woman's eyes beheld was that of a stranger taking her son into his arms.
