Sirius had sent but two valentines that year and all the talk from the lower school girls about the spring formal made him think of it. He'd only sent two and he didn't really care.

One was packed away tightly underneath his mattress at home, half written, and never sent.

The other, with a simple heart on the front and the words "please die" in printed ink inside. It's sole occupant, one Severus Snape, sitting moodily across from him in potions.

He'd wanted to send two valentines that year and the acknowledgement of both had changed nothing at all.

He stared fitfully at the blank sheet of parchment and the spread of disembowelded newts on the table and smiled; picking up a thick feathered quill and thinking that was just the way he liked it.
