A/N: Here's a very short one-shot, it's basically a scene taken from the movie Half-blood Prince and put into writing and Hermione's PoV. It's based off of the movie, so don't expect it to be a lot like the book.
Anyways, here it is:
Reading. That's easy. Reading him. That's close to impossible. They have known each other since first year. She had known that she liked him since second year. And have loved him since fourth year. Yet here they are, in their sixth year, and yet they still aren't together. Instead he is in the common room, snogging another girl. In front of everyone.
Not even trying to hide it.
So here she was, sitting on a set of stairs, in a empty corridor. Casting the spell that created birds. And crying. She just wanted to be alone, when She heard somebody at the top of the stairs. She thought about cursing them and telling them to go away. But loosened the grip on her wand as the person stepped down. Looking up, she saw Harry, concern in his eyes.
Hermione tried to think of what to say. "Charms spell," she said, wiping away the fallen tears, "just practicing."
He paused, probably thinking about what to say too. "Well, there really good," he ended up saying. He hesitated again, but slowly he sat down.
She suddenly realized something. Her and Harry were in the same situation. He loved Ginny, but she was with Dean. Hermione loved Ron, but he was now with Lavender. Harry probably knows exactly how she feels. He was already like a brother to her, why not share this?
"How does it feel, Harry?" she asked. He looked over at her, with a questionable look on his face. "When you see Dean with Ginny," she said, she stopped to let out another sob. Harry remained quiet the whole time. "I know," she finally said, "I see the way you look at her. Your my best friend."
She looked down, but looked back up when she suddenly heard giggling and footsteps. Ron and Lavender came rushing into the room. They were holding hands and slowed to a stop when they saw Hermione and Harry.
Hermione noticed that Harry moved his arms to wrap around his legs. Reading body language, he looked uncomfortable. The expression on his face was easy to read too, it said he was annoyed. Hermione felt the same, but both feelings were overcame by her heartache.
"Oops," Lavender said, she leaned farther towards Ron and said in a quieter voice. "I think this rooms taken." She rushed out of the room.
"What's with the birds?" Ron asked.
Anger started to flood Hermione's emotions. She suddenly stood up and gripped her wand tight. "Aprogno," she said. The yellow birds she made earlier flew over her head, circled, then rushed towards Ron. He started running and had barely missed them, when they hit the wall and disappeared. He gave Hermione a shocked look, she could tell she was about to break down in tears again. Then, with one last look, Ron left.
She started to cry again and went to sit on the bottom step. Harry moved down a step and angled himself so she could lay her head on his shoulder. She wrapped her arms around one of his arms, resting her head on the shoulder it belonged to. Without hesitation, Harry laid his other hand on her two hands that were holding tightly onto his arm.
"It feels like this," she heard Harry say.
She tightened her arms around his. Her best friend. Her brother.
Yea, reading was easy. Reading him was hard and painful.
