Farewell Party Invitation

"So what do you want to do this summer?"

"Something fun, I don't know. What do you have in mind?"

"We could pull a prank."

Max tilted her head to the side and turned to her friend with a questioning look. "Here you go again with your prank ideas." she scoffed.

"Don't you find them amusing?" the bluenette asked excitedly. Max had to admit, pranking Victoria with that love letter from Mr. Jefferson was hilarious and hiding Brooke's drone was a real fun watch. The most extreme they probably did was to install one of Chloe's step douche's surveillance camera on Principal Wells' office. Just when they thought everything was boring, Principal Wells actually liked to play jazz music and dance inside his office.

While everything was entertaining, Max wondered what kind of prank Chloe might have next. "I... okay, maybe it IS amusing." Max admitted. "But I will not work with you if you are planning to prank Mr. Jefferson or your step douche next." she gave her conditions in advanced, just in case Chloe successfully persuades her to agree.

Chloe laughed at the last part. "Are you kidding?" I never thought about pranking the step douche." she said and chuckled. "It would be cool but I also don't think I'd enjoy reminiscing about him when I want to think of something funny. I might puke."

"Touche."

The two girls laughed shortly before they heard Max's phone ring. "Uh-oh, who's that. the boyfriend?" Chloe teased when she saw through the photo flashing on screen that it was Max's fellow geek mutual friend. Max blushed but she pushed her friend and chuckled.

"Shut up, he's just a friend." she defends. "and his name is Warren."

"Just answer the call before he hangs up dufus!" Chloe insisted, making Max mumble 'okay okay bossy' and Max rolled away from her friend and sits up before answering the phone.

The two were lying down on Max's carpet in her room in the girls' dormitories.

"Hey Warren." she greeted, ignoring Chloe's muffled laughs behind her.

"Hey Max, sorry did I call you at a bad time?"

This worried Max, "What? No, no. Why would you think of that? Of course not." she wanted to assure him, not wanting him to worry. He can call her anytime!

"It took you long enough to..." while Warren was speaking, Chloe scooted closer to Max and whispered what to say. To which, Max copied in reflex.

"I was at the bathroom." she says, and she covered her mouth upon realizing what she had just said, earning another muffled laugh from her friend. Max regretted even listening to her friend. Things just got more awkward between them so Max rewinded the conversation to salvage what she might lose. ⇤rewind

"Hey Max, sorry did I call you at a bad time?"

"No, don't worry." she said confidently. "So what's up?" she cannot let Warren ask that question again or she's toast.

"Victoria wants to host a farewell party for Mr. Jefferson and they're doing it over at Nathan Prescott's house tonight." Warren says. "You and Chloe are invited to come. Well, I think everyone is invited." he added.

Max put it on loudspeaker so Chloe would hear the rest of it. "Really? Victoria inviting us to a party she'd host? Would it be a good idea to come?"

"If it's for a good cause, why not?" Warren brought up.

"Hmm that could be true. I mean, if she's doing this for Mr. Jefferson, she wouldn't want to show that side of her." Max thought aloud. "Alright, thanks Warren."

When the call ended, Chloe began to shake Max by her jacket. "Please tell me you are NOT going to that party!" Chloe wanted to assure what Max's answer meant. It sounded like she wouldn't go but at the same time she sounded interested.

"You are invited too." Max dodged out of topic.

"Yes but a party by that skank?" Chloe wanted to remind Max who was hosting the party. "That's a helluva party that we definitely do NOT want to go!" she said and stood up to head for the door. "Let's just go grab something to eat and chill out at the park or the lighthouse."

"Just imagine what David would say if you actually DID go to that party. Chloe in a dress." Max tried to bribe, "Sounds like something he'd lose his mind for."

Chloe turned the knob to think for a second, "Hmm, maybe a burger would help me think." she says and pushed the door open to leave the room. Max was right behind her.

But the two were surprised to see piles of photos scattered on the floor and a girl with dirty blonde hair picking it up. Chloe stared at the scene to let it sink in while Max had already processed what happened; Chloe's opening of the door must've hit Kate and now the stuff she was holding is all over the floor. So she elbowed her friend, motioning that it was her fault.

Chloe groaned silently and knelt down to help Kate pick up the photos. "Well gee sorry. That's hella not my fault." she said, receiving another nudge from Max who also knelt down to help them.

"Sorry I wasn't looking." was Kate's response.

While Chloe was picking up the photos, she saw one that looked exactly like her. Or well, maybe it IS her. She was lying down on the hood of her truck, looking up at the sky with a smoke between her fingers. She was just a silhouette figure because the lens was facing the sun. The photo was against the light. Chloe whistled. "Don't tell me Max submitted this photo of me to Mr. Jefferson!"

"What?" Max wondered what Chloe was talking about until she saw the photo in Chloe's hand. "Hey give it back!"

Chloe however swatted Max's hand away and laughed as she stood up to keep distance from Max, "and what grade did I give the Maxster?" she asked and flipped the photo. Max remained kneeling down, helpless and staring at Chloe while Kate finished up on picking up the photos. "Ooh, I got you a 91/100. Isn't that nice?"

"I had your consent before submitting that." Max justified.

"I think I can enjoy being your model, makes me feel high-class to be graded this high." she teased as Max gave back the photos she picked up to Kate. "Why do you have all this exactly, Kate?"

"I record the grades on Mr. Jefferson's book." Kate replied, receiving a gasp from the bluenette. "But I'm going to give it back now."

"Do you cheat your scores that's why you get a 3.9 GPA?" Chloe asked out of the blue, making Kate feel down about the accusation. Max noticed this and wanted to rewind time when Chloe held on her hand. "It's just a hella joke, 'kay?" she added. "Don't be worked up about that."

When Chloe returned the photo, Kate takes it and says nothing more other than a thank-you. But Max feels like this isn't how it should end. "So uh Kate, do you already have a dress for tonight's party?" she asked.

"Party?" however, Kate repeated the question, unaware of what Max was talking about. "What party?"

"The uh, party about-" before Max could say anything, she gazed on Chloe who was subtly shaking her head. 'Oh crap, I just mentioned about a party everyone is going to except Kate? Was she not invited or even notified? Did Victoria just forget? Or was she not invited on purpose?' "-the uh, the farewell party for Mr. Jefferson at Nathan Prescott's house." Max still finished despite Chloe's instruction.

Chloe mentally facepalmed at this. "Oh, I didn't know about this party." Kate says, confirming Max's thoughts. 'Crikes! If she finds out Chloe and I are going and probably most of us in class except her, she'd feel bad about this.'

"D- Did I forget to text you last night?" Max lied. "I was supposed to invite you."

By then, Chloe was already signaling that she rewind time and make sure this never happened. Even if it meant Chloe forgetting she saw a photo of her was graded a 91 out of 100. But Max did not rewind anything and the conversation continued. "I- It's okay Max. Maybe I shouldn't go. I don't think Nathan would be happy to see someone who had the Vortex Club suspended enter his house."

'Of course. After Alyssa told Kate how she was being harassed by the Vortex Club members to try being a slut of the party to gain reputation for herself, being part of an abstinence campaign, Kate reported it and Vortex Club was suspended and under investigation on what they really do on their parties. I doubt Nathan and Victoria took it pretty well, so maybe Kate had a point. Maybe it's best that she was not invited at all.'

I forced a smile and the only solution I can think of is to rewind time to the point before I brought up the party. I raise my hand, waiting, thinking, wanting to rewind, but the only thing happening was Kate staring at me in confusion. What is going on with you Max? I ask myself. I spend another few seconds but nothing. No rewind. "Max? Are you okay?"

"Uhm yeah, yeah. I'm fine. I just..." what is your next step now, Max? "I think Nathan would be happy to see you, I mean, you're Mr. Jefferson's assistant, he'd look for you if you don't show up." it was the worst excuse she's probably ever said, but it was because she was still stunned that her rewind powers does not work in the most crucial time she needed it.

"Okay Max." a quick answer from the believer. "You're right. We're all there for Mr. Jefferson. I'm sorry you had to put effort in convincing me. That's nice of you."

"Y- yeah, you can distract Mr. Jefferson while we prepare the venue!"

"I'll do my best."

Max was full of regret. She fell on her knees and was hardly breathing while Chloe was confused whether to laugh it off or inquire of this seriously. They first waited it out for Kate to leave the dormitories before talking about it.

"Care to explain the series of unfortunate events?" she inquired but Max simply buried her face to her hands. "Why didn't you just rewind?"

"I tried." she mumbled. "When the conversation was getting out of hand, I tried. But Kate just stared at me and no rewinding happened." Max says and looked up at Chloe. "My powers are broken."

"Can you try again?"

Max said nothing and extends her hand in an attempt for another rewind. ⇤rewind

"Care to explain the series of unfortunate events?" she inquired but Max simply buried her face to her hands. "Why didn't you just rewind?"

Max extends her hand again, wanting to rewind a bit further. ⇤rewind

"Care to explain the series of unfortunate events?" she inquired but Max simply buried her face to her hands. "Why didn't you just rewind?"

It was a mystery but she did not want to force herself to go back if she can't. "I tried." was her repeated response. "And yes, I tried again." she added in case Chloe was to repeat the same suggestion she did not long ago. This shocked the bluenette.

"Whoa, how did you know I was gonna ask when I haven't asked?" Chloe exclaimed. "Unless you already did several rewinds to get that response?" she joked but Max didn't seem enthusiastic for some reason. "Are you nervous because you lied? Why did you have to say all that anyway? It wouldn't hurt if she did not come."

Max shrugged. "Maybe because I thought it would be sad to know all your friends are going to party somewhere and you're not invited."

Chloe nods. "O...kay, what's the other problem?

"I'm also stuck into thinking my powers might be broken."

Chloe sighed and sits beside her friend. "What do you want to think about first? Breakfast or the party?" she asked with a mischievous grin. Max chuckled. The choices sucked but they both knew what Max would say.

"I'll stick with breakfast. Then I can worry about Nathan afterwards." she says.

"That's my girl!"

The two were on their way to the cafeteria.

Great. Just great Max. Two problems in one day because you lied. Karma burns fast when you lie to a believer... it's not that I blame Kate, she was only looking out for her friend Alyssa, it is out of her hand that the school would suspend the Vortex Club.

Maybe Chloe is right, I can just think about having a nice breakfast than pondering on my problems. I'm sure with a satisfied stomach, I'll be good to go with my rewind powers again. Yeah, yeah, maybe that's just it.

"Watch it!"

"Oh Nathan," I can't believe these are the words that I'd first say when I meet him. Can't his appearance be in the right timing? "I was uh, I was looking for you to ask about the uh,"

"Didn't I tell your geek friend to handle inviting the geeks?" Nathan responded and Max frowned. Why does everyone keep calling Warren that? He has a name! "You don't have to talk to me personally."

"Yes I uh, I received the invitation. But I wanted to ask if Kate is on the list?" when Max asked, Chloe mentally applauded the straightforward question. Seems like Max is a badass when she wants to.

Nathan scoffed at the question, followed by a ridiculous chuckle. "Who are you trying to kid? I ain't inviting that slut to my party. Are you really that dumb, Caulfield?"

"But it's a farewell party for Mr. Jefferson, she at least deserves to be there for him." Max continued to negotiate.

"Screw her, she can cry all her tears out, I don't friggin' care!" he shouts and was about to walk passed Max but Max blocked his path, much to Chloe's surprise, Max was really a badass, twice now.

Max took a deep breath before speaking. "It wasn't her fault with what happened."

"We run a party, she joins a friggin' abstinence campaign, we don't cross each other's lines until four days ago when we got suspended. She even sent that slump to spy on what we do!" Nathan was just exaggerating some things. The last part is not even true. "This party is some sort of redemption for the Vortex Club, it's not really about Jefferson. It was just Victoria's idea to use the 'farewell' theme to subtly start another party."

"She did not send Alyssa,"

"Says who, Max?" Nathan questioned. "You? It does not make it any less believable than it already is."

Ah screw this. This conversation is not working, I guess I can try again. ⇤rewind

This time around, Max was ready for Nathan. She knew that they would bump into each other so she already stopped on her heels and looked up at Nathan who was surprised she was right there in front of him.

"Hey Nathan," she greets.

"Don't greet me so casually, tsk." was all he said, putting his hands to his pockets and was about to walk away. This conversation haven't even started!

Max already saw previously that Nathan will not react violently if she blocks his path, so she decided to do the same again. She stepped in front of him to block him from leaving. "I want to invite Kate Marsh to the farewell party for Mr. Jefferson." she tried to say it as firmly as she could.

"Excuse me?"

"She deserves to be at that party like everyone else is. She's part of Mr. Jefferson's class." she says. She already had enough information from the previous conversation. "So what if Victoria wanted to just use the 'farewell' theme as a disguise? At least make it seem real and invite everyone! Put your rivalry aside!"

"Geez, chill! Okay, okay, if you want that slut to be in the party so much then fine. But you better be ready for the consequences. Victoria will not like seeing her there." Nathan warned.

Well that went... well. Maybe I can gamble one last thing. "I also kinda told her that... that you'd be happy to see her." Idiot Max, what are you saying? What if your rewind powers won't work and you can't take this back? You've forever humiliated yourself in fron of Nathan Prescott! Nathan Prescott of all people!

Nathan simply stared at Max for a moment before shrugging, "Whatever, just get out of my way." and walking away, shocking Max with his response.

"Wow, that conversation went so frickin' smooth like butter." Chloe commented as Nathan left. "Unless you added a little magic there?" She wanted to guess. Max was surprised with the results as well.

"Second try." she confessed. "Nathan is... unpredictable."
