"Um, hey. I know this is going to sound weird but can-"
"You're that Charlie guy, right? The one that got accepted into the police academy?"
"Yeah, and you're Renee from Science class."
"That I am! So..."
"I was wondering if you'd go to prom... with me?"
"I was wondering when you'd ask..."
"This place is so small! Can't we get a bigger apartment?"
"This is all we can afford until I'm done school. Two more years then I promise we'll get a big house."
"Two years huh?"
"I think you should grow a mustache."
"Hm?"
"You totally should! I'd look really good, it would make you look more mature. More cop like."
"Ren, you're almost too random sometimes."
"Ren! Baby! You'll never guess what happened!"
"What? Seriously! I'm on edge right now!"
"They offered me a job! I start right after graduation!"
"You're... you're kidding! Oh my God! Where?"
"Okay, I know it's not ideal but have you ever heard of Forks?"
"Whew, today sucked. This town is pretty dead, nothing happens crime wise. I kinda like it though, don't you?"
"..."
"Ren?"
"I'm pregnant, Charlie."
"R-Really? That's... That's great! We'll get married!"
"Married?!"
"Yeah... don't you want to?"
"Sure... how could I say no..."
"Isabella, you're the cutest baby in the world! Daddy loves you! Ren, she's perfect. Ren?"
"I'm going out, you want anything? Ren?"
"Ren?"
"Are you listening to me, Charlie? Charlie!"
I blinked a couple times and looked up. Ren's eyes bore holes thought my own as she clutched Bella in one hand and a bag in the other. Bella's tiny face was purple from screaming so hard. How long had Renee been standing there yelling at me? "Hm?"
"This is what I'm talking about! You're boring! This place is boring! I don't want to stay trapped in this backwoods town forever! I'm leaving. Goodbye," she turned around and slammed the door behind her. I could still here Bella cry as she pounded down the stairs. Slowly, I made for the door but my body felt heavy, like my chest was full of rocks. I turned the handle and just caught a glimpse of Renee as she pulled out of the driveway in her little brown Honda.
"Ren!" I took a step and slipped on the black ice on the steps tumbling into the hard December snow. "Ren!" I lifted my head and stared down at the red snow. Nose... I touched my nose and pulled away a bloody hand, "Ren! Wait!" She didn't see the blood, or didn't care, and sped down the street.
"Ren! RENEE!" I called after her. Leaning back, I stared down the street and rubbed under my nose with my sleeve. Michanically, I stood up and walked back inside. Without breaking stride I walked to the fridge and opened a beer. I threw it back in one go and crushed it in my fist. I burped lightly and tossed the empty can across the room. I cracked open another one and sat next to the fridge, cold air leaking out. "Ren..." I stayed there the rest of the night, getting lost in a case of MGD.
