Eren had always wanted to serve humanity. That had been his goal since he was a young boy. Now, he certainly had his wish. But at what price?

Mikasa had always wanted to be there for Eren. She was determined to be there for him and protect him like he had done for her. Eren was a solider now. Mikasa had followed, her only purpose being to protect him. Now, she was the one in danger. And Eren was powerless to stop it.

The mission had started off simple enough. Eren was to track a variant and kill it. Mikasa was there for support and to ensure that either way, the titan would die. It had gone wrong from the moment Levi had wished them good luck. Eren couldn't control his changes very well so when they found the titan, Mikasa was automatically put to the test.

Mikasa was overwhelmed almost at once. The titan had crushed her 3D maneuvering gear, causing her to be grounded. It advanced towards her, its chilling smile never wavering. Eren could only watch, his body frozen. He needed Mikasa. There was no way that this titan could destroy her… he loved her too much to let her go. Rage filled his body and a blood-curdling roar echoed through the forest.

Eren rushed forward, his titan body's strength helping him reach the two in record time. He snarled at the variant. It did nothing but stare stupidly back at him. Mikasa raised her head weakly.

"Eren?" she whispered, eyes wide. Eren felt his heart almost break. Mikasa had really thought he would let her die. Well he would just have to show her how wrong she was.

The steam had settled and the two were resting in a tree. Eren held Mikasa close, trying to calm the shaken girl. The near-death experience had been awful for the both of them.

"Mikasa…" Eren whispered, stroking the girl's hair gently.

"Hai?"

"Don't ever scare me like that again. I need someone like you… No, I need you with me all the time. Don't ever leave me." Mikasa smiled her eyes a bit misty with tears.

"Okay. I told you already, where you lead, I'll always follow." Eren hugged her to his chest.

The two arrived back at headquarters with good news for the commander. One; the variant wasn't going to bother humanity again, and two; Eren and Mikasa were the regiment's newest couple. Eren could have sworn that he heard the word 'finally' whispered as he told his friends. A smile played at his lips. Sure it had taken forever, but he was positive that this was only the beginning. He knew Mikasa would agree, just like she always did…
