Guardian Angel
I had been Selim Bradley's best friend for as long as I could remember. We had always confided in each other for our secrets. I felt I could tell Selim anything, but it felt like he wasn't telling me something.
One night, Selim and I were walking home when I swear I saw someone in the alley by my house. I paused and strained to look closer.
"What's wrong, Cheryl?" Selim asked me.
"Nothing." I lied, my eyes never leaving the alleyway as I headed to my front door. "I'll see you tomorrow." Selim nodded as I closed the door. After I had closed the door, I couldn't shake the feeling of dread no matter what I did. I looked around to see if everything was alright and saw no sign of danger. I felt safe until heard glass breaking from the kitchen and I froze where I stood.
"Damnit, Daniel!" I heard a male voice swear.
"Sorry, John." The one addressed as Daniel apologized.
"Well, whatever." John said. "Let's just find the gold and get out of here. This place gives me the creeps." Was this guy afraid of houses or something? It did get noticeably cold in here. And what the hell was he talking about; there's no gold here is there? My thought process was interrupted as I heard footsteps coming in my direction. Thinking fast, I quickly ducked behind the couch as the two men entered the room.
"D-Did you hear that John?" Daniel asked John.
"Yeah," John replied. "I knew there was something off about this house." There was a minute or so of silence until I heard the front door open.
"Cheryl!" I heard Selim call out. "You forgot your-" He was cut off as I heard gasps of surprise and choking sounds. I instantly thought the worst and hastily sprung up from my hiding place.
"Selim!" I called from fear, but stopped myself as I saw long black things with red eyes and jaws with rows of sharp teeth protrude from underneath Selim and stab the intruders. Fear swelled up in me as the men slid off of the things into a bloody mess on my floor and Selim turned to me. Everything in my head told me to run; that I was next, but a voice in my head told me to stay. After prolonging my decision to either run or stay, my legs gave way and I fell to the ground as Selim walked towards me. Regaining the feeling in my legs, I backed away from him until my back hit the wall. Selim smiled as he closed the distance between us by wrapping his arms around my neck and hugging me.
"It's alright, Cheryl." I heard him whisper in a distorted voice. "You're going to be alright."
"S-Selim?" I questioned. That didn't sound like the Selim Bradley I know.
"No, Cheryl." He said. "It's Pride." He pulled away and stared into my eyes.
"Pride." I whispered to myself. Pride smiled at me and turned to the dead bodies.
"I guess we should clean this up." He said smiling as he helped me up.
"Yeah," I agreed.
From that day on, I didn't look at Selim the same way. However, I still confided every secret I had to my best friend and guardian angel, Pride the Homunculus.
