midnight clear

It came upon the midnight clear
That glorious song of old
From angels bending o'er the earth
To touch their harps of gold
Peace on the earth, good will to all
From heaven's all gracious king
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing

It was at night when they were chosen. The world lay quietly, except for a small section of Odaiba. The forces of darkness had sent a Digimon to seek out and kill those children with the power to destroy them. But the Lightkeepers heard about that plan, and they sent another Digimon to seek and protect. A Botamon, a small baby. But the power within the children enabled Botamon to digivolve much further, into its Champion form of Greymon. The power used there let both the Light and the Dark to find the children that held the fate of the world in their hands. That moment, when they were found, would be preserved in history forever as the first of the Light's great victories in the Second War of the Balance. And when Greymon and Parrotmon were brought back to the Digiworld, the world lay completely quietly for a brief second. Almost as it could hear the songs of rejocing that the Lightkeepers were singing.

Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world
Across its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing
And ever over its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing

Another great victory in the Second War was the Chosen's return to the Digital World. It marked the finding of their last member, the second of the angels that would bring the Light's victory. It marked the discovery of warp-digivolution. And most importantly of all, it marked the defeat of the Dark's front lines. Now all that remained were the Four Masters and the final, greatest evil. Although these would be the hardest fights of all, it was from there a downhill battle. The Chosen had learned the means to defeat the Dark. And they had learned that they could. The morning star, the Guardian of the Light, had come to herald the dawn, when Hope would defeat evil. So despite its appearance as a Dark time for the Digiworld, the Lightkeepers were rejoicing and singing.

And ye beneath life's crushing load
Whose forms are bending low
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow
Look now! For glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing
O rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing

And the Chosen did win the Second War for the Light. But the Second War was not the last. Another Darkness found their land, and started a third war. In this one, the Dark had grown wiser. This time it too used a human representative. This human enslaved many Digimon, and forced them to work to spread his darkness, and he worked them almost to the point of deletion. But the Chosen came back, and freed the enslaved Digimon. And every new release marked a small victory for the light. And every one of these small victories was a time for the Chosen to rejoice and the Lightkeepers to sing.

For lo, the days are hastening on
By prophet bards foretold
When with the ever circling years
Comes round the age of gold
When peace shall over all the earth
Its ancient splendors fling
And all the world give back the song
Which now the angels sing

Why did they do it? Why did the Lightkeepers keep on calling the Chosen to fight, and why did the Chosen keep on fighting? They knew from prophecies that someday there would be no more wars to fight. Someday, peace would reign in the Digiworld. And then would be a time, not just for the Lightkeepers, but for all Digimon to rejoice and sing.
