The road to where she stood was a long and rough one. It taught her many things. It taught her how to punish, in chaining her children and turning them away. It taught her how to forgive, in letting them free. It taught her how to trust, in allowing Drogon to take her anywhere, away from danger. It taught her how to let go, in the death of Viserion.
It taught her how to love, most of all, in having Jon by her side.
She stood, now, watching him from afar, heart stinging. Tiny little pins and needles of doubt and fear pricked her chest. The night was going to be long and dark, the last she will ever see, unless she lives to see another.
There were things she had to do. She didn't want to leave this world without a talk. It was clear to her throughout the day that there was something yet to be resolved between them. Somehow, she knew it would worsen their battle spirit and a certain apprehension gripped her upon this revelation, but it had to be done.
As she watched Jon's direwolf and the hand unconsciously rubbing its ears, thoughts flew into her mind as others flew out.
She thought of Drogon and Rhaegal. Then, somberly, Viserion. When the direwolf rubbed its snout against Jon's palm, she thought of the first time she reached out to do the same with Drogon. The dragon was there, right there, a centimeter, maybe two, away from her hand. But at the last second, it turned away, leaving her heart in pieces only to come back and stick them back together. It was strangely poetic, she thought, to liken a direwolf to a dragon. They're both fierce creatures, but are entirely different at the same time. Other than the obvious difference in size, a dragon is untamed and will always remain that way. One can bond and teach, but can never tame, their dragons, as she never tried to tame them, but educate them. Direwolves will remain subservient once tamed, and is even more loyal than Brienne.
There is a direwolf in every dragon, and a dragon in every direwolf.
Especially with Daenerys and Jon.
