AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is based loosely on a beautiful monologue from some Broadway play- can't remember the name though. When you read this, try to figure out whose perspective it is. When I wrote it, I wasn't sure if it was Scully's, or Mulder's, or even both of theirs… Enjoy!

**********

They didn't think we would make it. They didn't have faith in us.

But we had faith in ourselves. That's why we couldn't stay there anymore. We had to get out. They were holding us down. All the fire that burned in our hearts, wanting so badly to be unleashed. I saw it in your eyes when we first met. You saw it in mine.

Never sure what was right, we cautiously walked in line, right behind everyone else. Keeping to the rhythm, staying closely to the beat of life. But walking through the office building, we saw them- the rest of them. Filing papers. Organizing their desks. Collecting data.

They told us to march along with the rest of them. Fall in line. Take the path of least resistance. Go through the motions of the day, just like everyone else. Do the work, firing your gun every now and then. Say hi to the boss, keep on his good side. Stare at a computer screen until you have tears in your eyes. Then come home to a cold plate of mashed potatoes, kiss your spouse and go to bed, only to rise in the morning to another day.

Not us.

We saw their pale faces, their blank stares as they whispered behind our backs. But no, we did not turn around. We walked on.

They did everything they could to split us apart. Divide and conquer. They knew we were a tower of strength, and without each other we were nothing. But we refused, kicking and screaming. They were not going to take you away from me, or me away from you. We made sure of that.

Or so we thought.

I remember every moment of that fateful day. I know you do too. I remember the bitter hand that touched my shoulder and told me I would never see you again. For a split-second I believed him. I gave him what he wanted and lost hope.

But you didn't. And that's what kept me going. I owe you my life a thousand times over.

Months passed, and I thought God had forgotten us. It seemed centuries later when it finally was over. All the pain, all the suffering, all the heartache was suddenly wiped away when I saw your beautiful face again. It's amazing how much someone can change in a precious moment's time.

It's been a long time, you know? We're older than when we first embarked on our fateful journey, wiser and more careful. Physically, we're weaker, but mentally we're so much stronger than every before. Our feet may be tired, but at long last, our souls are ready to run. Run against the wind, wherever that may take us.

So before we even had time to think, we knew what we had to do. We had to get out. We cashed in all our savings bonds and took out all the money we owned. You jotted down a note to Skinner, but I don't know what you wrote. You could have said we were going to join the mob for all I care.

I wonder what they're saying about us now…

So here we are. Once again, finding ourselves at two in the morning driving down a long-forgotten highway in the middle of somewhere that's nowhere to us. We don't know where we're going, but for once we know we're going somewhere. We've got money in our pockets, and a baby in the backseat.

And we're free.
