She shouldn't be doing this, she really shouldn't be doing this. But it's her first day back since Elizabeth Jane Castle was born and she couldn't miss her little baby girl more. And now, Kate has been staring her phone screen for the past 5 minutes wondering if she should call home and check on Liz and her husband. Going to the Precinct without him felt weird and knowing that he was alone with their baby girl made her feel bad. Sure, Castle took care of Alexis when she was young but still, Kate felt like she should call.
Not like she's been doing something important, just some paperwork and it was getting really boring.
Okay, Kate promised herself and to Rick that she wouldn't be that neurotic kind of mother who calls every hour, and a big part of her didn't want to make the call, but she's alone (Sure, Espo and Ryan were right next to her, but they simply are not her girl), and it's not like she'd be running straight home the second Castle picked up the phone. It'd just be a few minutes long call, five minutes tops. And when she realizes, she's in the break room, phone to her ear, waiting for him to answer.
"Castle", he says on the other end of the line, which makes her relax.
"Hey, babe, how you doing?", Kate answers, trying to be casual, but knowing he knows exactly what his wife wants.
"Mrs. Castle, weren't you the one who said you wouldn't call me today?", he teases and she couldn't care less. She wants to check on Liz and that's what she will do.
"Yeah, yeah, tell me how you're doing Castle", she says rolling her eyes, "You can make your jokes about no self-control later".
"Okay, Detective", he laughs, "And I know that by 'you', you mean Lizzie"
"You couldn't be more right about that", Castle can hear Kate smiling while saying that, "Now spill it."
"Our girl just ate and is now sleeping like the perfect little angel she is. And I know you didn't ask but I'm doing great, actually. I am now cleaning the kitchen and organizing everything for dinner, because I know you'll be exhausted. Oh, and Alexis is coming over. And yeah, I'm the perfect husband and father", said Castle.
"Shut up Castle", answers Kate rolling her eyes.
"Go back to work, Kate, we're fine. Now go catch the bad guys", he says.
"I'm just doing paperwork", she says.
"Okay, now go catch the boring part of your job", he says, making her laugh "Love you Kate"
"I love you too Castle", she answers with a big smile on her face, "Gotta go, bye."
"See you at dinner. Bye!", he says.
With that, she turns off the phone and goes back to her desk. Just few hours more and she'd be free to go back home.
