For the most part, admit it folks, Relena is/can be annoying. She is a plain-faced Jane who never seems to have any inner demons. But that's no reason to pick on the girl, so why do we?
1x2x1 Issues/ Heero dating other people than Relena
Basically, Relena is a threat to the 1x2x1 coupling (Heero x Duo/ Duo x Heero) and for that matter, any other coupling involving Heero without Relena. Because 1x2x1 is the main coupling that fans fight for, we will address that situation.
If any author wants to have a long-term 1x2x1 fanfiction with a good plot that's relevant and that centers on all of the aspics/themes of Gundam Wing, you have to get Relena out of the picture. How do they do it? Some authors choose to kill her, others have her back off from their relationship. Most however, turn her OOC (out of character) and bastardize her, meaning they make her look like an evil son-of-a-bitch. On the T.V. show she tends to have a stalker-like attitude and nature towards Heero, which helps to add onto the persona of "Evil Relena". One thing's for sure, Relena will not give up Heero in silence or without a fight.
The question is, why have Relena bastardized and not killed off or just have her back off?
1. If Relena was killed off in a long-term, well topic rounded fic, the author would have to address the issue of what the world would be like without Relena, not to mention how she died. All that explaining would lengthen the fic, and could sidetrack from the main point of the story. Even in Alternate Universe Fics, Relena is a prominent character and choosing to deny her presence in such a fic would leave out some themes of Gundam Wing.
2. Would Relena really choose to back off from Heero and Duo's relationship? Personally, I don't think so. I don't think that she would be so ignorant to not understand what was going on between them either. Many things that she had wanted from her personal life (like to know her Father better) ended up going not the way she wanted them to go. She also has many expectations to live up to from being so young and so influential for peace. I think her love for Heero somewhat sets her free from those expectations and makes her feel more like a girl than a vice minister.
For authors, it's easier to make a love triangle out of Heero, Relena and Duo than the other two options, mostly because a love triangle can easily fit into an already developed storyline so well.
