Sapphire Hearts knew she didn't quite fit in. Although her cutie mark sat proudly on her flank, she hadn't the slightest idea what it meant. Another 'talented-yet-talentless' had never been heard of before, and although it seemed a minor detail, it caused quite a few problems for her.
The Tuesday morning she woke to find her rear bedazzled with a blue moon, Sapphire excitedly ran to show her friends at school that morning, being one of the first in their class to gain their cutie mark. It was all very exciting for a few minutes, until one of her friends posed the question on everypony's minds –
"Well, what does it mean?"
Sapphire was left in a shocked silence when she realised she couldn't answer. It wasn't every day that somepony woke up to have supposedly realised their talent overnight. Hiding her face, she made a quick escape – meaning that she stumbled away crying, ashamed.
When she got older, the embarrassing questions did stop, although the apparent lack of a talent made it much harder to fit into a society in which your talent decides your entire life. While her friends went on to become bakers and farmers and weathermares, Sapphire found herself staying home, living off a combination of unemployment support payments and gifts from far more successful friends.
And although she did manage to fit in somewhat, the dilemma involving the cutie mark she should never have worn still caused Sapphire distress. And it's here we introduce you to The Unlikely Dilemma of Sapphire Hearts.
