Vox Populi
Pairing: Cloud/ Leon, kinda
Author's note: I don't know where this came from, I was listening to 30 seconds to Mars and then BAM! Here it is. Admittedly this sucks a little bit, like this much, but there we go.
Disclaimer: I don't own Leon and Cloud, or anything of particular value, now that I think about it.
Anyway, enjoy
Sci-fi
He was awake when the cry went up. Stuck, staring at the ceiling, listening to the deep even breathing of his room mate.
Foot steps pounded down the hallway as other soldiers picked up the chant.
"An attack! The enemy is attacking!"
A cry they had been waiting for. A call that caused a flurry of activity so well practised he moved on auto pilot, grabbing and putting on gear at an adrenalin fuelled pace.
"Its time to go to war" He glanced over at his room mate, the pair still hurrying to get dressed, to get ready for the battle that was to come. To get ready for the battle that was already here.
"Yeah, it is" Standing up he grabbed his helmet from the hook on the wall and jammed it onto his head, felling the comforting , familiar pressure of the chin strap as he pulled it into place.
He closed his eyes and took a breath, filling his lungs to bursting point. Tasting the sand. Tasting the night. Tasting that untimely scent that was the desert. Blocking out the frantic cries and thudding footfalls from his mind and focusing on the cool desert air in his lungs and the rhythmic beating of his heart in his chest. Calming himself.
Just like his father had taught him.
"Cloud?" the sound of his name broke him from his reverie and brought him back to the chaos rushing back to his soul.
He met his roommates gaze.
"Yeah, Leon?" the other man sighed, looking down at his feet as he shuffled them awkwardly. When he looked up Cloud could see a hint of fear in the grey eyes that he often caught himself staring at and missing when the other wasn't there.
"Good luck" Cloud couldn't help the snort of derision escaped his nose.
"Not like I'll need it"
"Yeah, well" Leon trailed off and the silence hung between them.
"You, too, though"
Leon's head snapped up and he smiled at Cloud causing Cloud's heartbeat to sky rocket.
He was more than surprised when Leon stepped forward and embraced him. Slightly awkwardly due to the amount of armour that they both had on, but by the time Cloud registered that Leon had hugged him, Leon was already three feet away from him looking regretful.
Cloud moved closer to Leon. Leon stumbled back as though expecting the worst.
Cloud smiled at Leon.
Leon smiled back.
"See you later, Leon"
"See you, Cloud"
As one they stepped out the door and joined seamlessly the other troops.
The only thought running through Cloud's mind was that if he and Leon survived this mess he would make sure he felt those arms around him again.
