A/N: This little piece is an attempt to oil my rusting -cough-nonexistent-cough- writing skills, and also to commemorate my new-found affection for Ouran High School Host Club, which, despite its weirdness has managed to capture the afore-mentioned affection.

Sum of the parts
Kaoru. Hikaru.
Kaoru.
Hikaru.
Haruhi tilted her head to study the twins again, sleeping peacefully. Hikaru lay draped half across the desk, arms splayed. Kaoru sat to his right, one arm protectively around his brother's shoulders, his head resting against Hikaru's side, snoring softly. Evening sunlight filtered through the large school windows into the nearly-empty classroom, illumining their caramel hair in a golden blaze, and for that small moment, the two of them looked like angels, angels with heads of fire, innocent while asleep and wicked, conniving, when awake.
Hikaru shifted in his sleep, murmuring incoherent nonsense. Kaoru's hand tightened for the smallest of moments, before Hikaru relaxed once again, and all was rest and quiet and a serene haze once more.
Hikaru, the aggressor. Kaoru, the protector.
Hikaru, the sun. Kaoru, the moon.
Hikaru, the unstoppable flame. Kaoru, the wind that aided and abetted it.
Hikaru and Kaoru, so many things intertwined into one in their own unique crystallised universe, until one was no different from the other.
Haruhi smiled slightly at how quaint that sounded, and wondered if the twins would use that concept in their subsequent... endeavours.
Wondered if there was a grain of sense in it, a sort of invisible balance.
Wondered if there was anything that would tilt it to either side.
She watched as Kaoru's arm shifted to envelope more of his brother's shoulders, and realised that it would have to be something tremendous, because as long as it was them, the sun and the moon, the aggressor and the protector, the flame and the wind, nothing could sway them.
Hikaru.
Kaoru.
Hikaru. Kaoru.
The whole was always greater than the sum of the parts.
