By the Fire
"Hard to believe, only one more day until we go home." She flipped her long brown hair and nestled deeper into his Tokyo U sweatshirt. "I'm going to miss this place."
"I will too," he replied as he took off his glasses to clean them. "I wonder how much we've missed." True, they had been receiving letters from their friends at the Hinata House, but it wasn't the same as being there. The former ronin laughed, " I wonder how many inventions Su has come up with." He sighed remembering the various contraptions the foreign girl had nearly killed him with.
The beautiful college alumnus looked out the window and saw the gentle Vermont snow fall on the ski slopes outside. She turned back to the flames, burning brightly on the stone walls of the lodge. She grinned at her fiancée, remembering last night. It took him a while, but 4 years of going out and one ski trip later, he presented her with the surprise of her life.
"I have loved you so much for so long. And I wanted to give you this." He had thrust a small envelope at her. She looked at the contents, a photo booth picture of a diamond ring. She felt so confused until she looked up and saw him holding the ring in question. "Naru Narusegawa," he said, "will you marry me?"
She smiled, remembering how she jumped into his arms and accepted his proposal. It was, a memorable night, to say the least. Well, now she had her own surprise for him. She looked behind up at the man she fell in love with. The light fell on his face and his black, untidy hair. He glanced down at her and smiled. He leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips he came to love.
"I love you Urashima." She got up off the thick rug and sat on the red velvet couch, smoothing out the wrinkles in her knee-high skirt. She motioned for Keitaro to sit next to her.
"What's up?" He put his hand through her hair, which was falling casually over her shoulder.
She took his hand in hers and kissed him deeply and sweetly. She drew a deep breath before speaking. "Keitaro I have to tell you something." She took off his glasses and frowned. "You really should get contacts."
He laughed. "That's what you wanted to say?" He was amused but he knew that his lovely bride-to-be had something more important, more pressing to tell him.
The twenty-four year old shook her head and smiled. She looked up into his deep eyes and fiddled around with his glasses.
"Tell me," he requested, and planted a short kiss on her forehead before she spoke. "Okay," she began, "Keitaro." she closed her eyes. She had the words perfect this morning, why couldn't she speak them? What would happen when she told him? Would he still love her? Would he be afraid and leave her? Oh God, she thought, let him be happy. But the words wouldn't come. She smiled sweetly and said, "It's nothing. Let's go to sleep. We have a ton of packing to do tomorrow."
They stood up and walked, hand in hand, back to their room. Oh well, Naru figured, it can wait until tomorrow. She grinned to herself at the thought of her little secret and walked up the stairs quietly, following the lucky father-to-be.
