Don sat on his couch bored. He'd had a hard week and while he had originally told his dad and brother that he'd go over for supper, now all he wanted was to rest. Don picked up the remote and flipped through the channels; finding nothing on he turned on the radio. He settled on an oldies station that his mother had loved. A Ricky Skaggs song was on so he laid his head back and allowed the music to flow over him.

Oft' my thoughts drift back to childhood

To the time when I was free

As I played before the fireside

Around my darling mother's knee

Tears formed in Don's eyes. He shook his head, angry at himself. He couldn't break, not now, not ever. His dad and Charlie needed him to be strong; needed him to be the one to lead them. As the song continued though, he couldn't stop the tears.

There's a blessed home up yonder

Where my loved ones wait for me

I saw mother in a vision

Kneeling there to pray for me

Why he didn't just turn the station or turn the radio off, he didn't know. Something about the song was haunting. Don got up and walked to the kitchen, grabbed a beer, and downed it. The song seemed to get louder.

Then one day our mother left us

Daddy said she'd gone to rest

Oh, how I miss my darling mother

As she held me to her breast

Don stayed in the kitchen. He couldn't go back to the living room; a fear creeping up on him. It was feeling he'd never known or least never succumbed to. He stayed, planted where he stood.

There's a blessed home up yonder

Where my loved ones wait for me

I saw mother in a vision

Kneeling there to pray for me

Don closed his eyes, trying his hardest to block out the pain. Suddenly, though, he felt like his legs just wouldn't hold him up. He sat on the floor in front of the fridge and allowed his emotions to take over. He began to cry, "Why did you leave me mom? What did I do that was so wrong?" Don felt his chest begin to constrict and he knew he was having a panic attack. "Please help me mom…please mommy." The words slipped from his lips.

Some sweet day I'll meet you mother

You little boy is coming home

To see you as in days of childhood

The one you loved but left alone

As the song came to an end so did his tears. Don pulled himself together and went to freshen up. He needed to see his family; needed them more then they would ever know. Don had allowed himself to break now he needed to remind himself why he needed to be strong. He pulled out his cell and dialed Charlie's number.

"Hey buddy, did you and dad eat? Yeah, I'm on my way; see you a few." Don hung up and smiled; it was a good day after all. The song played in his head but this time it brought peace; peace that said he would be all right.

There's a blessed home up yonder

Where my loved ones wait for me

I saw mother in a vision

Kneeling there to pray for me

THE END

A Vision of Mother by Ricky Skaggs.

A/N: I hope you liked the story. I know Don's a little out of character but I did what I could to make the story work…sorry!
