Chapter 1

'Five minutes before she died, Grace Cahill changed her will.

Her lawyer brought out the other one, which had been her most guarded secret for seven years. Whether or not she had been insane enough to use it, Willian McIntyre had never been certian.

"Madam, are you shure?" he asked.

Grace looked out the window, across the sunlit meadows of her estate. Saladin, her cat, snuggled beside her as he had throughout her sickness. But his presence was not enough to console her today. She was about to set in motion some events that might cause the end of civilization.

"Yes ,William, i'm shure," Her every breath was painful.

He broke the seal on the brown, leather folder. William was a tall, Craggy man. His nose was like a sundial ,pointed, so it always cast a shadow on one side of his had Grace's closest confidant, adviser, for half of her life. They had shared many secrets over the years, but none as perilous as this.

William held the document out for her to review. A coughing fit wracked her whole body. Saladin mewed with concern. When the coughing had cesed, he helped Grace take the pen. She wrote her weak signature across the paper.

"they're so young. If only both of their parents-" William got cut of

"But neither of their parents did," Grace interrupted bitterly,"And now they must be old enough. They are our only chance."

William contuinued," If they don't succeed-" he got cut off again.

" Then 500 yrs of hard work have been for nothing. Everything collapses. The family, the world- all of it," Grace finshed.

William nodded solemly, and took the folder from Grace's hands.

She sat back, silently stroking Saladin's silvery fur. The scene outside made her upset. Is was to wonderfull a day to die. she wanted to have one last picnik with the children. She wanted to be younger and stronger and travel the world again.

But her eyesight was fading. her lungs worked overtime. she grabbed her jade necklace-a good luck charm she had found in China many years ago. It had seen her through many close calls, and many lucky misses but it could help her no longer.

She had worked so hard to prepare fot this horrable day. Still, there was so much she had left undone...so mush she had never told the kids.

"It will have to be enough" Grace whispered barely audible.

And with that she closed her eyes for the last time.

When he was shure she had passed away, William went to the curtans and closed them. He liked the darkness more. it seamed more suitable for the buisness at hand.

The door slowly opened behiend him. Saladin hissed and jumped under the bed. William didn't look back. he was looking at Grace's signature on the will, which had just become the most important document in Cahill family history.

"Well?" a voice asked.

He turned. A man was standing in the doorway his face distorted by shadows, his outfit black as oil.

"It's time. Make shure they suspect nothing," William said.

He could not tell for sure but he saw the mad in black smile.

"Ohh, don't worry they won't have a clue," the man promised.
