She was ecstatic when Sasuke asked her to the homecoming dance, a school-wide dance that happened only once at the beginning of each school year.
She was frantic when she realized she only had three days to find a dress.
She was nervous when she tried on dress after dress, trying to earn Ino's approval. (They had finally decided on a green halter dress that brought out the color in Sakura's eyes.)
She became dejected when she looked at herself in the mirror.

Her forehead was too big, her hair too bright, and her face incomparable to Ino. Next to Sasuke, she felt like nothing.
As she took off her contacts, she looked at herself in the mirror again. This time, she smiled.
She could only feel beautiful when things were blurred, the lines and colors meshing into a beautiful abstract.
She could stare at herself forever and feel as though she were pretty because she couldn't see herself clearly enough to say she was ugly.
And she became beautiful (to herself at least.)

"Ino! I don't think I can do this. My hair's all messed up after you curled it because it was already too short, and my forehead shows too much!"
"Shush. You said yourself that you're beautiful as long as you can't see yourself. Just go with Sasuke; you're beautiful to him no matter what you say and no matter what you yourself see."

"You look… nice." Sasuke tried to hide the pink tint spreading over his cheeks.
"… really?"
"Really."
And she believed him because he was Sasuke and he had perfect eyesight.
