A brief re-write of "As You Were"
A very brief rewrite of part of "As You Were"
'I'm sorry, did you say you got me a gift? What is it - is it a pony?' asked Audrey.
'Forget it,' Duke replied, lifting his glass as he walked away.
Audrey knew she had misstepped as soon as the words were out of her mouth. She had always been socially akward, but when it came to Duke she seemed to be completely inept at times. Once again she had bulldozed right over him. She watched his back at he stalked off down the hallway, at a loss as to how to save the moment.
The next thing she knew she was running after him. When she caught up with him she blocked his way forward. He tried to step around her, but she stepped in his way.
'Duke...'
'Audrey, let's not do this now,' he sighed as he once again tried to go around her.
'Would you wait a minute? Please!'
She was using what he thought of as her 'police voice', and it made him all the more determined to ignore her, hurt her back.
Then she did something neither of them expected. Stepping right into him, she threw her arms around him, pulling him to her and holding him close. Duke was in shock - as much by what Audrey did as by the look of fury on Nathan's face as he came around the corner.
Never missing an opportunity to poke Nathan with a stick, Duke grinned at him before he stepped back from Audrey, cupping her face in his hands and planting a tender kiss on her lips. She returned his kiss with enthusiasm until the moment was shattered by the slamming of the front door as Nathan exited the building into the storm.
What can I say? I'm a hopeless romantic!
