It was a beautiful winter day. Everyone was playing in the freshly fallen snow. Everyone that is, except 1. He was sitting sulking quietly alone. Even 8 was in the snow.
"Heads up!" 7 yelled as a huge ball of snow came careening towards 1. It seemed to suspend in midair for a few seconds before crashing down. She cringed and turned to survey the damage. His hat had gotten the brunt of the snowball, a little pyramid shaped pile on the top of his hat. He shook his head, just a miniscule movement, to get the snow off. He didn't look amused. Everybody turned their attention to 1. Boy, did he look pissed.
"Why you little.." He fumed, getting up and storming over to 7. She blinked and stared at him, kind of wary. He stooped and scooped up a handful of snow. Putting it into one hand, he squished it into her face, whitewashing her. She wiped it off with one hand, the other hand holding a snowball. She repeated the gesture, both of them now somewhat covered in snow.
Soon it was an all-out brawl between the two. He had tackled her into a mound of snow that was once 5, 2 and 9's fort. She shrieked and went headfirst into the snow pile. They were repeatedly shoving snow into each other's faces.
It was no longer angry fighting though, in fact, despite himself, 1 was actually having fun and laughing right along with 7, who, despite herself, was also laughing.
Right at that moment everyone else rejoined the fray, having a good old time.
Finally, after everyone was soaked and somewhat exhausted, at least four hours later, they all went back inside. 7 watched as 1 led them back all in. He seemed different, younger even. As if the old man wasn't so very old and crotchety. Perhaps they weren't as different as she had originally thought.
'Perhaps..' she thought, smiling slightly at 1. 'just perhaps.."
