Written for the Character Appreciation Challenge (Fabian Prewett) and the Chutes and Ladders Challenge (giving up hope)
"Well?" Molly says, a grin tugging at her lips. "Are you going to dance with the bride or not?"
Fabian chuckles, offering her a roll of his eyes. "I have two left feet, dear little sister," he says, but he climbs to his feet anyway and takes her by the hands. "Why would you want to dance with me?"
"Because I have to dance with my favorite brother."
"Oh, I'm sure you said the same thing to Gideon, too," he accuses playfully as a song begin to fill the night air.
His movements are clumsy, but his sister is an excellent leader. Fabian smiles to himself. He doubts that will ever change about her. Molly has always been so headstrong.
"Do you think you'll ever get married?" she asks.
He rolls his eyes. It's a question he and his brother have faced time after time from their mother. It seems a bit unfair to have to hear it from his sister now. "I think one Prewett marriage is enough for now," he chuckles.
"I'm starting to give up hope on ever getting any nieces or nephews," she teases.
"Well, you can always have lots of children. Give us the nieces and nephews so we can spoil them rotten then hand them back," he says as they slow to a stop.
"Oh, I only want one or two," she says.
"Lots," he repeats firmly, though the twinkle in his eyes betrays the joke. "Give Mum plenty of grandchildren so that we'll be off the hook."
With a laugh, Molly wraps her arms around him. "Just like you two," she says. "Leaving all the work for me."
"Oh, but you're so much better at accomplishing things than we are."
Molly pulls back and swats his arm, her lips pursed. "I'll be expecting my niece or nephew in the next few years," she says with a laugh before walking off.
Fabian watches her go, smiling to himself. It's a nice thought. A normal life, a loving spouse, and brilliant kids. Maybe part of him wants it.
But he feels that he's running out of time. Rumors grow more and more every day about a threat that hangs over the wizarding community. And as he watches Molly lead Arthur to the dance floor, he can't help feeling that maybe she'll be the only Prewett with a happy ending.
