"Actually," said Elsa from the bedroom door, "The rumors are all true. I go dancing and drinking in the pubs every night, and I've slept with as many men as there are stars." She stalked over to the bed. "So good to know that your mouth is shut so tightly." "Elsa!" Anna whipped around so fast I could hear the bones in her neck pop. "I didn't hear you come in. I wasn't gossiping, I was just talking to—" "To a complete stranger? And that is different from gossiping how?" "She's not a stranger!" Anna said indignantly. "She's our friend, we've known her for ages." "We've known her for two months. Now, it's late, and we have a big day tomorrow. Back to bed, both of you, and I don't want to hear any more from either of you about me." "You can't send me to bed," said Anna, "I'm already IN bed." "You can go back to sleep, or I can freeze your eyes shut until morning," said Elsa. The queen sighed and ran a hand through her platinum-blonde hair, forehead to crown, and I saw the dark rings under her tired eyes. "I want to sleep. Without hearing things from the next room about me that would make a priest blush." "Make me," challenged Anna. "I can talk as late as I want to, with whomever I want to." "Fine," said Elsa, and suddenly Anna was howling and clawing at her eyes, trying to remove the sheen of ice that had just glued them closed. "Elsa Elsa that's not fair I can't see you did that on purpose you're a—" Elsa looked sideways at me and winked. "That's much better, I think." "I can still hear you!" Anna jumped out of bed, nightdress askew, hair wild, and almost fell over as her feet hit the floor. "I'll get you! You're an evil, rotten, mean, horrible sister and I'm gonna make you feel sorry for what you did—" She staggered around the room, throwing random punches at the air. Elsa ducked easily around a flying fist and poked her in the ribs. "It's time for naughty princesses to go to sleep," she sang. "Hey! I'm not a— whoa!" Anna shrieked as Elsa swept her up off her feet and plonked her back on the bed, where she immediately jumped back up again. "I don't want to!" With a mock battle cry, Elsa tackled her, and they tumbled backwards together onto the bed. Anna screamed and giggled as Elsa's long pale fingers found the ticklish spot under her chin. "Mercy, mercy!" "No mercy for you!" said Elsa. "You're my naughty little sister who won't go back to sleep! I sentence you to death by tickling!" I stood by and watched, jaw hanging open at the sight of the Queen of Arendelle and her sister, wrestling on the bed, wearing nothing but nightdresses and huge grins. I will never understand this family, I thought, not if I live a thousand years. "All right! I submit, I'll go to sleep," gasped Anna, and smothered Elsa in a bear hug. "Raargh! I love you, Stubborn Face," said the queen. "I love you too, Bossypants." "Blabbermouth." "Nosy Nose." "Nosy Nose?" Elsa raised her eyebrows. Anna smiled up at her, water flicking from her lashes as she blinked. "The nosiest one ever." The queen got up from the bed, straightened her nightdress, and tucked the covers back over her sister. "I'll see you in the morning, and for the love of God, try and get some rest. I can't have you falling asleep at the banquet tomorrow." To me, she said, "I trust you can find your own way back to your quarters?" "Of course, Your Majesty," I said, with a curtsy. "Goodnight!" said Anna. "Goodnight," replied Elsa. As we slipped out of Anna's room, I heard her say just before I shut the door: "I have the best sister in the world …"
